I have a similar reaction with certain types of upright strings. It’s like my sweat turns into glue and my fingers stick to the strings. PITA lol.

Did you make the hex key, or did you buy one that works? I’ve been searching for some stubby allen wrenches online, and I haven’t quite found what I’m looking for yet.
Those strings ruined the basses for you?
- Not because of the strings, but because I moved away from fretless and the fretted was already marked to be sold. I used the TI flats as a selling point because of their price, folks like them and I didn’t want to keep them.Actually I found it in one of the Roscoe envelopes I have. So it must have come with a bass.
I had a “Gotcha” moment with those strings.
I bought the first set, put them on a fretless and was enjoying them at home. I decided to take the bass to service one Sunday and that’s when I had the worst time with them trying to play. A situation I was not happy with.
I’ve ground some down with a dremel knockoff (lots of sparks!!!), so I have a few now (and Keith sent a set when he sent my bass back). When I bought the Red Devil, it had the wrong size wrench in the case (shows how often the necks need to be adjusted).
Someone had recommended these before, I bought one but have yet to use it

Exactly. This time he's doing a curly maple top with a blue finish.
I'm always a little tempted when he decides to sell one, but this tastes are just enough different from mine that I'm able to resist He likes that "two tone" sapwood look a lot more than I do.
I appreciate the uniqueness of the sapwood but it is really not my favorite looking wood type. Figured Cocobolo, Walnut, Bubinga or Koa are my favorites. However, since I bought all my basses used, I own Gould ggi6 and SKB 3006 with spalted Maple tops, my Century 3006 fretless has a spalted Myrtle top and my Century 3005 has a flame Maple top. I do own a Peavey Cirrus 5 with Walnut neck and body that has a Bubinga top. That one is not highly figured but is still pretty. Oh yeah, I nearly forgot my Modulus Q6 that has a quilt Maple top. Maple tops seem to come my way.
I gotta say, this isn't one of my favorites. Just not my style.

I like everything that he spec's other than the flat top. I really prefer the carved Roscoe tops.
I used to be like that when I was running through basses like that. The quest for tone. I'll give him some grace. He'll figure it out, like I did, eventually. HE's close. He's figured out that Roscoe is the way to go.

A lot of Roscoe basses have passed through my collection. There was only one that had an issue and Gard was not helpful about that so I sold it for that reason. It was an SKB 5 fretless with a pretty serious dead spot.
I presently own three Roscoe basses and they are each wonderful. Every time I play one I fall in love with it again. My SKB 6 was my choice for my church gig yesterday and I enjoyed it so much.
I am finally to the point that I am satisfied and determined not to go down that road of trying to "upgrade". The basses I have may not have my first choice of woods or other options but they suit me just fine.

Finding “that bass” can easily be an expensive rabbit hole experience. At least that’s what I understand from chatting with other players.

Yep, I think you hemmed and hawed and let the best looking of those two basses slip through your fingers. But it happens!
