Roscoe Club

A previous member posted this in the Facebook group, and given his track record I knew it would be for sale soon. This is an insane spec Roscoe imo. Koa, BEM, and non-slanted pups. But with my Bordwell being built there's just no way I can swing it. Suck. Dang pretty to look at tho.

Gotta love a Shane spec'd bass. I've gotten 2 from him, I'm glad it wasn't a SKB body or I'd be in trouble with wifey.

I just gor a Century Signature from him - Koa over ash, wenge neck with BEM board. Struggling to find the right sound though, I might pass it on.

Don't know if anyone's interested, but this six string fretless has been showing up on CL searches for a long time. If it was a four string bass, I'd be looking into it myself. Belong to anyone here?

That’s one of Ryan’s former Koa basses. I’ve got the other one and it’s an awesome bass. Plays like a dream and cuts through the live mix wonderfully.

On the beautiful Koa LG, Shane is still waiting on it. Sounds like it’s stuck in customs. He’ll probably still sell it after it arrives though. LG’s aren’t his favorite body style.

On a whim, I called Keith the other day. For some reason, he always picks up the phone for me. I just wanted to catch up with him and tell him how much I enjoy my LG3005. Like anyone else, he enjoys praise. His son Kyle still works with him and he sounds upbeat even while he is very busy. He's a tough guy and seems to love his work. And it shows. There is no other bass like a Roscoe and I'm so grateful to own one.

@SteveC
Glad to hear that your Roscoe is back working properly. I'll have to say that you've certainly been faithful to that Bart/Bart combo over the years. I haven't owned a Bart/Bart Roscoe (and kept it that way) in years but I've got to say that I'm really enjoying the sound of my Koa/Ash Roscoe with the Bart/Bart combo.
I gave @MattLplaysBass a hard time for having the Pope Flex Core preamp and never installing it in the bass but now I have the bass and the Pope preamp and it's still in the box! I'm sure that I'll eventually get bored and install it but for now I'm really digging the thick juicy tone of the Bart/Bart in this bass.

Well, maybe its the Koa/Ash combo? Yet I like the Bart/Bart in my fretless which is Maple/Mahogany. 🤷‍♂️
I guess I figure if it's good enough for Keith, it'sa good enough for me.

I have disappointed myself more than once by changing electronics in a bass. However, sometimes it is a good thing.

I recently saw a review that compared several preamps in a Sire Jazz bass and one that was raved about was the Audere. I have a recently acquired Jazz bass so I ordered an Audere preamp for it. I installed it and then removed it because it slightly altered the tone of the bass and dealing with getting all the wires and battery in just the right position so the control plate would fit flat against the body was a lot of trouble.

Then there was a very inexpensive Squier P/J bass that I bought. It was in near perfect condition but something was not right in the electronics. It sounded lousy. I looked at the electronics and saw no evidence that anything had been changed but, oh boy, it sounded lousy and the controls seemed to be off. Yeah, I checked and it was wired correctly. I installed a set of passive EMG P/J electronics and now the bass sounds great.

As I said in an earlier post, I have only had one Roscoe that did not have the Bartolini electronics. That one had the Bartolini pickups and a Demeter preamp. It sounded lovely but the other Roscoe basses have all sounded lovely too.

Glad you got it sorted out. Now it is time to practice.

As a sidebar to updating a faulty Bart preamp in a Roscoe bass: Having done so several times, there is a difference in the older preamps and the current ones. Many older Roscoes have 2-module Bart 3-band preamps, while the current Bart 3-band preamp is a single module.

I have replaced 2 faulty versions of the old 2-module Bart preamps with an updated 1-module preamp. Not only is it a seamless swap audibly, it saves some real estate in the control cavity due to consolidation of 2 modules into 1. Win-win in my book.

While I definitely favor Bart preamps in Roscoes with Bart pickups, I also use and recommend Nordstrand, and am curious to try a Pope. All of these are overall-gain adjustable, which to me is the most useful function of a preamp.

I have never found a preamp with unity gain to be useful, actually disliking every one I have tried. I won't recite the list, respecting the users of those often-popular circuits. However, unity-gain only is a feature that disqualifies any preamp from my recomendation. And, if I had choice of a unity-gain preamp or no preamp (passive circuit), I would choose no preamp.
