Roscoe Club

so I just got my skb 3006 from Keith (Alder/Cocobolo/Rosewood). He has improved so much from my last Roscoe build I received last year. I think the pandemic really impacted the flow of production, but now I see that he is clearly back on track and even better than ever. A few things I noticed: besides checking off every custom request I made (which was many), everything is glued super tight, wood is evenly cut, weight was distributed evenly, finish was spot on, and none of the production issues I saw back in 2021-2023 were present. He is using definitely better quality wood that is older, drier, and less prone to humidity changes (not to say that my first bass had bad wood or anything, just that this time around its much more higher quality). Perhaps the pandemic made the wood drier because no one bought custom basses during that time and it sat in his warehouse for an extra 1-3 years that helped with stability. I think what happened during the pandemic years was that he probably had to slow down due to this and quality control was not the best because he did not have enough personnel or the right personnel, but whom ever he has passed on his knowledge to today, they took very good notes and are fully capable of building very nice custom basses in a timely fashion. My first custom was ordered in Feb 2023 and I got it Oct 2023. This one I ordered May 2024 and got it Nov 2024. Shorter build time and better results, what can I say more about Keith. Simply amazing. And no, he is not in bankruptcy anymore thats a false rumor as he successfully emerged from that a while back. As everyone said here, if you get paranoid like me, just email a few times, come back here if there is no response, then just call Keith direct. Hopefully he can make a few more wonderful pieces for everyone here before he retires. We all know all his pre-retirement/legacy instruments will shoot up in value just like ken smiths one he retires. I am never selling my Roscoe to anyone until Keith retires LOL, and even if he does, I'm probably keeping these two.

Well now I have a buzz. Not all the time, just facing a certain direction, you know. I forgot to try it passive as I’m not used to that option. But in the same venue, before I thought I had issues, it was dead silent. And it has always been that way until now. Full volume, hands off, spin in a circle quiet. I am beyond frustrated. Part of me wants to overreact and go passive with everything and not have issues. I run my preamps flat anyway so why bother. Except for about 5 songs right now, I play my Classic P anyway.

I need a couple days to calm down and try to figure out how to proceed.

Congrats on your new SKB 3006. Could you please share a few pics with us? We're always appreciative to see new Roscoe builds on the club thread.

Sorry to hear, Steve. Is this problem with just your home studio setup, too (like before, with it being multiple basses and not just the Koa 5), and not your live rigs (amp and iem)?

This was at a gig last night. Buzz went away - or was less anyway - if I stood facing a certain way. My Classic P didn’t buzz. My G&L passive JB2 with new custom wound pups (hum cancelling) didn’t buzz.

I’m not sure what the next step is. When my bass was in getting the new (apparently unnecessary) preamp installed my wife asked why you need a preamp and what does it do. Sometimes I wonder as I play with the flat about 98% of the time.

If it's just the new Bart preamp, I'd call the tech and let him know. Ask him his ideas. I'd consider putting the old Bart preamp back, assuming that the problem you attributed to it was not the point of origin, as duplicated on your other basses, active and passive.

an active preamp buffers the signal so you end up hearing more high end which might be why you’re not hearing it with other passive basses.

Lots of things could be causing the buzz, a lighting rig, ungrounded power somewhere along the chain etc. but if you can eq out the buzz and it doesn’t happen everywhere you go maybe it’s nothing to worry about 🤔

🤷🏼‍♂️ Maybe. I just don't want to loose all my treble. It's not really noticeable when everyone is playing, and it's worse in our IEM's of course than FOH. Just frustrating is all. I don't want to keep swapping stuff out - especially when it apparently didn't need it. I am just used to a high level os silence and dependability and now I am apprehensive about using the bass.

Bummer Steve. It's probably related to the installation. It can be so many things though (bad pot, bad soldier joint, shielding tape too close to pot terminal/connection, .....). I'd take it back to the tech and let him check everything out.

Yeah, I think that's my next step. They did have to put the stacked pot where the mid was for some reason. Not that that would be the issue but maybe something about having trouble getting it in? It should just drop in but I suppose things do change after 13 years? 🤷‍♂️

This is at my local MGR. I checked it out awhile back and took some photos but forgot to post about it on here. They have it at $2,500 on Reverb bc of fees, but it's only $1,999.98 on their website [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]. It's in great condition, plays well. It is as heavy as it looks and in general any Thunderbird bass I've ever played sits oddly on the lap if you're a right-handed right-leg lap player; it needs a strap. Has an Aguilar OBP-3 and IIRC Nordstrand pups.
