Roscoe Club

Oh man that is awesome.... thanks guys!

Yeah man! You can also do custom sets from any of these if you want to try something else. As I mentioned before, I usually get custom Fodera sets from Jason even though they are not listed here. If there's something you want that you don't see, just send him an email. He also sells tons of other stuff..pedals, bags, Aguilar equipment...and has a discount program for TB users.

R Cocco's SS on my LG brought it back to life, so to speak.
I was at a TB gtg a while back and one of the guys (Deb here on the board) brought his Bee Bass strung with Cocco's. I was intrigued by the tone of the strings so I picked up a set for my Roscoe. I am a fan! So much so, that I have re-strung my Pedulla and Moon basses, with the Cocco's.
I had tried many different strings on my LG, some I liked, some I didn't. The Cocco's seem to hold their freshness better than many and I really like the piano tone and evenness across the strings that the Cocco's bring to the table.
If you can find them, I'd suggest you give'em a try.

You can also buy a set directly from Roscoe.

That's what I do. I also like the nickel DR's but for the cost difference the Roscoe D'Addario's are a much better deal.
I've tried everything out there and always end right back using the Roscoe D'Addario's. For some reason I just can't fall in love the the SS strings. I'm probably just to old school.

Or maybe just too old! :D

This may be a Gard question but I'll take an answer from anyone who knows...
SKB 3006 Fretless (#5199), Diamondwood fingerboard - what's the radius ?

I had this set up perfectly all through the winter and it's fighting me now.
Winter humidity was not super-low since we do not have forced-air heat, but there is no question it's hotter and more humid now.
Going through all the online setup resources (e.g. Jerzy Drozd) and the section in Gary Willis' book, both of which are great as far as they go, but they reference height-above-frets which is not helping me as much as I'd like.

I have a small (like I can see a small gap of light using a straightedge) bit of backbow which everybody seems to indicate is good since it give the strings room to vibrate. But I still get a bunch of weird harmonic buzz pretty much everywhere on the board - if I wanted a sitar I'da just bought one... This indicates to me the strings are -still- too low although I've loosened the truss rod about half-a-turn total from its perfect winter setup -and- raised the saddles. And naturally with all this tinkering the intonation is whack but I'll address that last...

Is this maybe just a symptom of dead strings? FlexSteels been on about 6 months but I don't get to play much. I have a spare set...

Thanks guys - I'll get it figured out but I wouldn't say no to a bit of guidance...

I got my new Nordstrand NJ5F pickups installed in my Century J this week. ........Much happier with the tone now. It's about 85% of where I want it to be now, so I do think that I am still going to swap out the preamp as well. But, I'm going to gig it first just to see how it sounds live.

Mr. Bump was spot on with his description of what the pickups would do to the tone. Thanks, Greg!

Did you really mean backbow? Thats not right, you want a small amount of relief in the neck. Press down at the 1st and 24th frets, you should see about 1/64" gap between top of the fret and the string.

No frets.
Still true ?
1/64" between the bottom of the string and the top of the fingerboard?
Or some other amount?
This is the one area of setup that I have not been able to find addressed with measurements for fretless...

Right now I am using the Aguilar OBP3 with Nord NJ5FS hum cancelling. I think the NJ5F single coils sounded better so I plan to put them back in. I have tried the following preamps in my bass, Bartolini, Aguilar OBP2, Aguilar OBP3, Demeter and U-Retro and the following pickups, Bartolini, Fralin, Nord NJ5F and NJ5FS. I think the biggest issue is pickup placement on the ash body as it lacks punch and sounds thin to me. I had a 4 string Roscoe JJ with an Alder body and it sounded much better than the ash, not sure if it is because of wood density. If I were to order another JJ bass, I would want the pickups in the standard Roscoe position for the soapbars.

IMO, I think Alder and Spanish Cedar sound the best utilizing Roscoe Barts/Classic Barts and Demeter Preamp.

I believe that all necks on Roscoe basses have a 16" radius.

On your setup for the fretless, I setup fretless necks to be as straight as possible (zero relief) to maximize mwah. I believe that this is what Keith does also but Gard can confirm that.

Thanks for both!
I have no lack of mwah, especially with the FlexSteels (rounds...)
But I've crossed over the line into choked buzzing...
I'm headed back to flat (1/4 turn this morning).
Once I get there I'll just concentrate on string height adjustment at the saddles.
