Roscoe Club

I have this Roscoe 3005 fretless up for sale on in the classifieds.

I am really surprised that this bass is still around! People should just buy it already! A quality instrument for such a good price.

I have tried the Aggie HCs and didn't care for the tone and they lacked punch IMO. I asked the guys at Aguilar if they could build me a DB4 in a J pickup, they are considering it but it is not available yet. I have tried both the Nord NJ5FS and the NJ5F. The NJ5F(single coil) pickups sound really good and open whereas the NJ5FS sounded a little compressed on the lows and highs comparably. The NJ5F singles picked up a little noise with my Streamliner so I used shielding paint in the pickup cavities then put a piece of copper tape in the bottom of the pickup cavity and soldered a wire to my control cavity ground which is completely copper shielded. That knocked the noise right out.

I haven't tried the Nordstrand preamp yet but have tried the Aguilar OBP3, Bart 3 band, Demeter and Pope flexcore but wasn't satisfied so I ordered a U-Retro. I have the J-Retro in my Lakland DJ and it sounds amazing so I figured what the heck.

Anyone want to buy a Aguilar OBP3 with 4 knobs and two switches?

Dayymmmmnnnn. I am in the midst of installing aggie pups and preamp in my roscoe. I would have gone with the nordstrands if I knew about this earlier. Now that I have started, I hope I'll like the aggies though. *fingers crossed*

My take is the Nordstrand NJ5 single coils are pretty much the ultimate choice if a 5 string single coil tone is what you're after. If you want hum cancelling then there are a lot more close options, with the Nordstrand NJ5S and Aguilar 5J-HC being very close in my mind. Slight nod to the treble on the NJ5S but really the Aguilars are excellent pickups.

I am VERY happy with the NJ5F pickups in mine. That bass is now the first one I reach for.

Roscoe performed fine at the audition - it lit up with sound where I had left the knob and I didn't touch it...
Maybe the DeOxit worked its magick and maybe not - I'll light it up again tonight. Either way it's getting a new pot as soon as the replacements arrive.

I, on the other hand, did not perform well. "OK for having learned the songs the day before" is the best spin I can put on it.
Objectively, sucky. They wanted a pro-level player and I'm not one yet, which we both knew, so no surprises.
Learned a lot, including 4 new songs, so no regrets. All part of the growth process.

Tone is so subjective from person to person so you may love the tone. I know Jeff Moote and I have very similar if not the same taste in tone and what he is hearing is the same for me.

I figured I should post these here since A) they came out well and it's sexy, and B ) I know this is the place they'll be enjoyed the most :)

That grain is ridiculous!

Just an update on the volume pot crisis...

As I mentioned, I made it through the audition and didn't touch anything, so that was inconclusive.
Finally had a chance to reconnect everything and light it all up this morning.
Volume was smooth and continuous through the full range - so I'm not in a panick to gratuitously change out the pot for a replacement just yet, although I know the day is coming and I've got them on the shelf.

So - the DeOxit worked - eventually. Don't expect instant miracles, but use it at the first sign of scratchy or dropout places and give it a day to work its magick. Just a few small drops from the needle tip squeeze bottle down the shaft bushing worked for me.

You definitely have to "work" the pot after you spray it with the DeOxit, a few dozen full-range turns seems to work for me. It isn't a "spray and go" type thing.

Just got my bass back with the Nordstrand single-coils installed. Um, holy cr@p. Talk about a night and day difference. The bass now has a super-deep growl with plenty of gank available. It sounds like a boutique Reverend Rumblefish, which is a tone near and dear to me. Psyched!

Awesome Dave! Glad to hear that it worked out for you.
You'll have to bring it to the GTG in Warner Robins this year so we can check it out.
