I know...the bed needs sheets. Oh well, ain't got time for that;) Aguilar 5J-HC with obp3. Full, fat and punchy. Especially when more of the bridge pickup is blended in:) Made in May this year and bought around 3 months back from Greg. Considering selling this though, as I'm a soapbars kinda guy. Still trying to love the single coil tone! If anyone has a Roscoe 5 stringer with soapbars for trade, you know who to pm:)

I'm gonna eventually be sorry I did this. Maybe.

I'm a single coil jazz guy. I've tried tons of other stuff. Yep. Single coil J5 guy.

So, all you Roscoe guys with single coil J5's, show me what you got, and wax poetic about them and such. Thanks.

Ok, full disclosure: Those aren't single coils, but they're close. And let me tell you...this bass. It was amazing when I got it from the guys in Greensboro, but when I put the Nordstrands in it. Holy ****

Wow! Beautiful! That wenge finger board goes so well with that Top (koa ?).
I can't image that one not having a sound in it for you but I do kind of know where you're coming from. especially if you don't have another Roscoe with the Bart soaps. The Roscoe's with the JJ's don't have that traditional huge phat tone. Much more focused.

Still ...... beautiful bass!

FYI, that is not a SKB 3006.

It's an SKB 5006. ;) (and it is one of the few neck-through Roscoes period, being fretless it is probably one of 2 or at most 3 ever made)

A neck-through is the only way some people will go. I actually enjoyed the one I had a while back (not a Roscoe). I've often wondered why that design isn't even offered as an option.

Two reasons we (well, I wasn't here, but the "royal 'we'" ) stopped:

1) VERY difficult to do the way Keith wanted it to be done

2) Almost ZERO interest in the market

Frankly, I've played several of these neck-thru Roscoes, and while they're fantastic instruments, I strongly prefer our present bolt-on basses.

I was a neck-through snob for years and years. I wouldn't ever consider a bolt-on unless it was a Roscoe. Now, it's really not much of a big deal for me either way. I bet that the Roscoes would loose a lot of their signature growl and punch if they were neck-through though.

An up charge for neck through models to make up for the extra difficulty and time spent on the bass? Might as well tap on the market even though it might be small;) just my 2 cents haha

That upcharge would have to be significant. It is really that hard to do it correctly and we are flat not set up to do it - there would be no economy of scale. We are not really a "custom shop", as much as we are a" hybrid production shop that does a lot of custom options on the production basses and guitars we build". If we were truly a one-off custom shop, maybe we could look into it, but we can't jam up our schedule on one or maybe 2 orders a year when there are 400 others trying to get done in a timely manner. As much as I'd like to run the joint as my personal hobby, it's a business and we have to feed the guys that work here - so I have to always look at new (or old) ideas with an eye toward feasibility.

Bottom line with neck-thru: there isn't enough market interest to justify the R&D effort and investment of capital to do them.

The one thing I like about neck through is the "easier" access to the upper register. But - I've always preferred the way a bolt on sounds, the way the notes react, etc. especially for slap( not trying to stir up a debate) . So I'll probably only buy bolt ons. In fact I have 6+ basses and they are all bolt on.

Neck-through or set-neck. What was the old Burger King jingle, "have it your way"

Personally, i think if you limit your comparisons to high quality instruments on both sides of of the discussion (i.e. a properly fit and aligned neck/pocket) the differences will be subtle.

I prefer a set-neck because you usually have an additional option or two for making things right if bad "stuff" happens.

Second bass from the right has Nordstrand NJ5F single coils and Nordstrand 3 band preamp in it. It originally had Bart J pickups and preamp, which always left me wanting a little more.

The Nordstrand pickups REALLY brought the bass to life.

Yeah, isn't that green bass a thing of beauty? I've got such insane G.A.S. for another Century. I thought for sure my next one would be a Standard Plus with the sickest top they can find, but it's hard to argue with a cool solid color over swamp ash..
I think it's hard to argue with swamp ash, period. Colored or not....
