Roscoe Club

I have the Aggies in my LG (1 piece Ash Body with Maple board) and they pair very nicely with the ACG EQ-01. I imagine these pickups would sound equally good with the Uni Pre. I definitely like the Aggies over the Bart Classics as they sound more balanced to my ears. This bass definitely has a modern tone, less aggressive mids, with a more rounded bass, nice highs which you can make sizzle if that is your thing. It took me a little to really figure out the ACG filter style preamp as it is different than the Alembic Spoiler I had years ago. I had to add knobs with a line for visual reference, this was pretty much a must. Now I can dial the tone in really quick.

Would you say a little more about the differences between the Bart Classic and the Aguilar pickups?

Has anyone tried the new Nordstrand Big Blades? I wonder if they sound as nice as they look?

A TB member I know said they compare more to Nordstrands Big Splits...

From our conversation:
"[The Big Blades are] really nice. big, bold, meaty, in-your-face pickups. where I love Big Splits for jazz bass. They are kinda like Mary Ann, where Big Blades are Ginger."

The Barts have that ever present low mid bump to my ears. Though the Aguilar DCBs sound similar in some ways to the Classics, they are more balanced across the tone spectrum. If you have a Bartolini preamp in your bass you may not hear a huge difference because of the preamp voicing using the DCB's. I tried Roscoe/Bart and Bart Classic pickups with my ACG preamp but I wasn't quite happy with the low mids, they seemed to have a little lack of clarity and punch whereas I think the DCB's have more clarity. I definitely think the Aggies shine with a different preamp than the Bartolini.

Locally I have installed DCB's in two Roscoe SKB basses, one had a Demeter preamp and the other a Pope Flexcore. The Demeter Roscoe sounded close to an MTD in my opinion, definitely a lot of mid scoop. As crazy as it sounds, almost to clean. The Flexcore 4 band really took advantage of the full range balance of the DCB's. Having a high and low mid with adjustable frequency really gives lots of options and I would recommend this combo if you don't mind having to fiddle a little bit more to dial in your tone but once you have it, it only takes a little tweak of the upper mid to cut right through the mix.

I played a LG with DCB's and Aguilar OBP3 and if you are into, "slap you in the face nasty mids", this combination can give it to you in a lethal dose.

In a nutshell I would have to say the DCB's are more balanced without inflated mids.

Another option for pickup if you are looking for a more modern tone is the

That analogy makes total sense.

Hey, I've got a variation on an old question:

I recently moved to a country where there isn't much bass gear to be had. Fortunately, my brother is coming to visit from the States and can bring a gig bag with him. I'm willing to pay for a nice one that will last to ensure my SKB stays in good shape. Any suggestions? I'll need recommendations on the sooner side as I need to order the bag over the next few days. Thanks!

I use Mono and Protec Contego gig bags for my basses and they both work (and protect) well). The Protec Contego is the best bang for the buck. You can pick those up at ebags.com for $119 shipped. The Mono M80 is around $199.00. I actually don't prefer one over the other. Both great soft cases.

Thanks everybody, I'll check em out!

+2 for Mono gig bags. I've flown with the double and the single, gate checked and overheaded respectively. Unscathed. Countless gigs and rehearsals as well. I've heard good things about Protec, but I've got a lot of Mono products that I'm happy with! Sorry if you've already made a purchase.

Same here, but never checked.
Flight attendants give the evil eye when I tell them the double fits in the overhead bins

Does anyone know if you can buy a Mike Pope Flexcore with an active/passive push/pull pot on the master volume/tone stacked pot instead of having a separate switch (a la John East P-Retro)? I didn't see the option on Mike's website, but I was curious as to whether I can get away without modifying my bass. I think the OBP-3 is too mid-range-y and colored for me...I want something more transparent and you guys seem to like the Flexcore for that.

You can't have both the stacked pot and the push/pull. Single volume with p/p is available.
