Roscoe Club

I really like TI flats on my fretted five. Rounds were always the prescription for my fretless.

A while back I gave EB Cobalt flats a try. They do feel like flats, but have the sound of rounds. Not that expensive either (nothing near what TIs will set you back).

They're on my fiver. The only hitch is that I can't find a 'C' to make up a set for my six.

The closest I've come to a Double Bass sound was a Wyn fretless five (yes, seriously). I have witnesses.

Rob Allen is for sure good, but (for my ear/taste) the best fretless is a Roscoe followed by Zon. That's why I settled in with a five and a six (see the avatar).

The TI's on my fretless are the last set of strings that bass will see while in my possession.

My Current family. The Shell Pink is kind of whited out in the picture due to lighting, it is actually darker in person.

Well, I can hear a Rob Allen or Roscoe fretless. I suspect if I was curious enough I could hear a Zon fretless. Now a Wyn fretless? Who gets to hear those?

JohnnyR had a really beautiful Wyn fretless a couple years ago. It had a strangely dampened sound. Sounded like the strings were dead (even after installing a fresh new set of RW's. Similar to an upright but not really the nice growly swell that you get on notes with a nice upright. I think he sometimes uses too many laminates in his bass. Apparently hippie sandwich basses just don't make good fretless basses.

My experience with fretless basses is with less than a few, but the ones I have certainly appeal to my ears, and others agree. Wyn basses are quite beautiful, more accurately and to my eyes, most are wood media art work. I guess trying to appeal to both works of art and a great sounding bass has its hurdles.

this one is now hanging with me.
SKB Standard Plus 5, strung with new Labella gold flat wounds, will become my new country bass.
first Roscoe. Probably not the last.

One of my old Roscoes! I also played in a country band. :)
