With all the wiretapping talk going on in the news lately, I first thought that might be the British Surveillance Organization ...

I guess that it's always a good idea to read the previous posts before drawing a conclusion!:D

As for shiny strings, I don't like them. I found that when the stage lights hit them just right, the reflection blinds me and I can't see my finger board!:help: ....just kidding. I could care less.

....... shiny strings are great for fishing though. Especially bass.:)

Wow...so there IS a Roscoe club on here. Shame on me for not finding it sooner.
Here's my baby - SKB Fretless 5 - black gold finish, Bartolini Js and active preamp - "JB" pickup position.
Living 90 miles from Greensboro, I was able to participate in (most of) the build, selecting woods, etc. The fingerboard didn't turn out the way I wanted, but it could be MUCH worse. It has black fret lines on very dark ebony, so they're pretty much invisible (what's the point?!). If I had it to do again, I'd just go unlined.

This bass looks and plays so amazingly beautiful; I'm glad to be a Roscoe owner! Gard and Keith are really good guys, too.

I have only seen 4 Black Gold basses in person and every single one has just looked amazing.

Went to Roscoe this past Friday and got the chance to play a new Classic 5. Just an amazing instrument with the extraordinary playing Roscoe neck. I got to see the body of my Custom Classic 4. I went with a solid color, Olympic White. The white has been final sanded and is waiting for it's final coat then to buffing. Hopefully in a couple weeks it will be finished. I dropped off a John East J-Tone pre-amp to go in the bass. I have a J-Tone in my really nice SX bass. I went with Vol/Vol stack, Bass/Treble stack and Passive Tone. John East did a great job of keeping the pre-amp transparent in the Passive mode as it operates like a passive J bass with Vol, Vol and Tone. Put it into Active Mode and it retains the Jazz tone but you can give it a boost in the bass and treble and use passive tone control to fine tune. In Active I set the bass between 1-2 o'clock and the treble at 11 o'clock and set passive tone to 1 o'clock.

Selection is limited on the hardware color, it comes with a chrome control plate and either Black or Chrome knobs. I have the Chrome knobs on my SX and went with the Black knobs on the Roscoe. I think it will accent nicely with the black pickups and chrome tuners and bridge. In my excitement, I forgot to take a picture so maybe Gard can snap one once it gets the final buff.

Yeah, I am already thinking about how I can also end up with a Classic PJ5 as well. :D

I was at the shop today and got to see a number of great looking Classic bodies/necks as well as play a complete PJ5 that sounded absolutely massive. Your bass should be excellent, and I like the sound of the East J-Tone a lot. I'll watch this space for that one when it comes around...

Of course I too am now left thinking about a Classic, as was @Gard's plan all along I'm sure ;)

Great hang with Greg @RocketMusic and Doug Baltimore (not sure of his handle on TB) as well. All in all a very Roscoe filled afternoon.

That Shoreline Gold body looked really nice as well. Yeah the PJ5 sounded and played really nice if it was the same one with the Aguilar pre.

I have been really impressed with the J-Tone, the passive mode is so transparent and when in active you can dial in some nice punchy bass. I am really curious to how one would sound in a PJ?

I really wanted to come to the shop yesterday but I needed to go with my wife to Rocky Mount, her 80 year old dad isn't doing well. They sent him home with Hospice care and with the amount of pain medicine he is on and the weekly increase of dosage it is like watching someone slowly overdose. Just a really sad situation.

The Classic 5 is a sweet bass, and I love that it is 19mm spacing. I really think Roscoe hit a home run with the Classics.

So they had a blowout sale going locally and my wife got me a nice G&L JB-2 jazz bass for my birthday yesterday. It's no Roscoe of course, but for the cover band I think it'll be pretty decent. I recorded with it at church and right off the rack it sounded very respectable. New strings and just a little set up tweak and it should be a nice bass. I probably won't be looking for a Classic - for a while anyway.

Anyway, as I've posted before I like the sound of my 6 with the Bart pre and jazz pups. It has D'Addario NYXL Nickel round strings. I have the same strings on my 5 with the bart pre and soapbar ups. I haven't really liked the sound I'm getting from it lately. It seems to be missing something, fullness, bottom end, I don't know.

I have always liked jazz basses/pups. My 6, the cheap G&L, sound good. Gard suggested some custom Nordstrand pups that would get me a "jazz-style" pup in the soapbar case. I'm wondering if there is a string option that might get me closer without going the more expensive pickup replacement. I know strings can make a big difference in tone, but maybe I'm asking too much. I was debating selling the 5 and getting something but now that I have my b-day present, I may want to keep the 5 longer and see what I can do. Kind of nice to not have to sell a bass to get a bass, and to have a 4, 5 and 6 to choose from I guess.

Any thoughts?

Yep, gonna keep this one. And it's really not a bad bass at all.
I think the my local guy has some Sunbeams and Nickel Lowriders in a 5 set. I'll check today when I get some Straploks.

I liked the nickel Lowriders B, but prefer the Sunbeams E-G. If not doing Basstringsonline who could accommodate that, nickel Lowriders might be the best starting point, the B typically gets less use unless you're doing Country, so you could get a 4 string set of Sunbeams when the Lowriders wear out. But they do last a long time, for me anyways.

Steve, before you buy any strings let me check and see what I have at the house. I have both Lowriders and Sunbeams but not sure the sizes. I ordered some strings for a local guy who gave a deposit but left town. I think I have 45-105 nickel lowriders and 40-95 Sunbeams to try on your G&L. I will look when I get home from work tonight. Not sure what 5 strings I have.

Sounds good. I'll just get some StrapLoks and hold off on strings for a bit. I usually play 45-105 but I'm not averse to trying a lighter gauge.
