Roscoe Club

So, I played all my cover band tunes with my (un-named) 4 string today. I tuned my E to D for 2 tunes and to C# for 1. Makes me think I could get by very easily with a 4. Seens like it "rocks" better than the 5 or 6.

My wife asked if it was an excuse/justification to get the "Roscoe Geddy" currently at Chicago Music Exchange.

NRD - New Roscoe Day! Well, new to me - it's a 2010. I'm totally digging this - and the 35" scale just might be doable! I had mentioned on another post that I was considering a custom spec 34" scale, but when this popped up in the classifieds, I had to jump on it and test it out. I had originally been looking at the SKB, but I really like this smaller LG. I put on a new set of strings and plugged into a Genzler 800 / Genzler BA112 and wow - tone for days! I also noticed that the neck is really stable. No gigs until the weekend after this, so I can't wait to put it to the real test.

I'm already looking at Rocket Music Roscoe Archive because I still want that SKB. I guess I'm already hooked.

Yup. You got the bug. I have 2 LGs and a Century 6, but would like to try a SKB, but then they came out with the Classics and now I am in a conundrum.

Well, at least she didn't say, "Which Roscoe, the 5 or the 6 are you willing to give up to get the Roscoe GLC"? The unnamed 4 string you have was a gift so I assume it would need to stay? I have only played my SKB3005 (the one in my avatar) once since I picked up my Classic Custom. The reason why, the singer I sometimes back transposes 90% of his songs to the key of B and really digs the way the low B sounds on the Roscoe.

I have tried a few different types of strings on my Classic and oddly (I love DR Strings) enough I like the way the D'Addario NYXL 100-45 sound. With the East J-Tone it sounds really good and goes between slap and finger style without having to adjust the tone.

I remember seeing that bass before it left the Roscoe shop, I love the Cherry Burst finish.

No, she didn't ask which would go. She insists I keep what I have no matter how crazy I get.

The "unnamed" bass was a birthday gift from her. They were blowing out G&L Tributes (JB-2) at a local store so she got a ridiculously good deal. It's a really nice bass. Currently has TI Flats on it for my occasional jazz gigs, but sounds god for the cover band stuff as well.

There isn't a better feeling neck than a Roscoe - especially the 5 - but I'm really liking the more narrow 4 string lately.

I played Fender J basses for around 30 years before I switched to a Roscoe SKB 6 over 10 years ago and added my SKB and LG 5 strings along the way. What really surprises me more than anything is the muscle memory I have retained on a J Bass it is like it is programmed into my DNA.

I have already started saving for a Classic PJ 5. I will probably get beat down on this remark but I prefer the new neck profile and 19mm spacing on the Classic 5 string over my SKB3005 and LG3005. :jawdrop:

I haven't tried a classic but my friend did at NAMM (the exact bass that I want actually) and said "you need that bass" when I asked him about it.

Not sure how I can slip this one past my wife. She's VERY understanding (I've bought and sold my 6 three times) but even she has limits.

You can only buy the set with the .125 from Roscoe as D'Addario only offers the .125 in a light set of strings. Otherwise you can buy the 4 string set then buy the .125 as an individual string.

If you want a different flavor of brand, any DR dealer can order a custom set of strings for the same price as off the shelf. On my Roscoe 5 strings I use DR Sun Beam Strings 40-60-80-95-110. It didn't cost me any more for the .110 instead of the .125 or .120 standard size.

I have to give D'Addario a +1 on their NYXL 45-100 4 string set which came as a recommendation from Honey Badger Pickups. These strings sound really good on my Roscoe Classic Custom.

On the string topic, I just put a set of D'Addario nickel wound XL on my LG3005 - regular light gauge - 45 / 65 / 80 / 100 / 130 - because I just happened to have them in stock (a bass player friend of mine gave me several sets of strings a few years ago when he was moving and getting rid of stuff) and they're working out pretty good - had to adjust the B string saddle down a bit and no issue with the B dropping into the nut. BUT, I'm thinking I should try out the stock set though.

One thing I noticed is that the neck is stable as heck. I'm a new Roscoe owner, so I did not know this. I'm used to having to adjust the truss rod when changing strings 0r when the weather changes! I did loosen the rod a bit because the neck had zero relief and I like a little bit so I can dig in and not have buzzing issues.

For you long-time Roscoe players: Are these necks pretty much "set it and forget it?"
