Roscoe Club

Don't give up on those Roscoe Bart P/U's yet. Make sure that you try a few different types of strings on the bass before you make any changes. I can promise you that a Roscoe with the Bart/Bart combo will cut through a live mix so well.

Congrats on the purchase!:)
I personally don't feel the Bart/Bart combo works with a spanish cedar body. Many years ago I got a bass with that combo. I sold it within a week. Got completely lost in a mix. Incredibly frustrating. If that were to happen now I'd simply swap out the electronics or the pickups, or possibly both.

I've had alot of basses with the USA Bart combo (granted none of them was Roscoe's) and I liked all of them. However this Custom Century I have with the Aguilar DCB's and OBP-3 combo is nothing short of amazing. Best tone I've ever heard and I've had several that have heard me play for years say it's the best they've heard to. Those DCB pickups are amazing and cut perfectly in the mix. Very versatile pickups.

Curios, what is the difference between a Noordstrand DC5 and a DCB? I know my DC5s have coil taps. Maybe it's the same PUPs, I know mine were considered a custom build at one time.

To me the Nordstrand DC pups are a little more warmer and have the ability to do the COil tap options. The Aguilar is more punchy and clear and sound better when soloing each pickup compared to the Nordstrands. I love Both but the Aguilars are my favorite pickup I've played so far.

You know Andy, I had a couple fairly light Spanish Cedar bodied Roscoe's that did have an issue cu

Seems that I had that problem on a couple Roscoe's with SC bodies. They were fairly light though. The heavier SP ones sounded really good.

My fretless SKB has a Spanish cedar body with a maple top (+ebony fb). And I quite like the Roscoe Barts in it. A bit dark ( I like it dark), but no lack of bite. I actually find it quite versatile. I find it not too far removed from the Fbass AC6 that I used to have, which no surprise had a similar, but reversed, wood combo (maple body and spruce top). But the SKB, with the two pickups, I find has even more usable range of sounds.

Hey all, I know there's a Roscoe Classic thread, but there's more people on this one so...

I just ordered a Classic PJ5 (Alder/Pau Ferro/Aguilar pickups and pre). Then Keith mentioned that they also do a P/MM, which is something I had never considered. It feels risky, since a PJ is a known quantity, and I really don't know what a P/MM would sound/feel like. Man, I was all set and decided and this new possibility has thrown me for a little bit of a loop...

I know either the P or the MM has to be moved from its sweet spot, so I might not get a true Stingray tone out of it. But if I could get a P and Stingray tone out of it, that would be amazing. But what does a blended P/MM tone sound like?

Can anybody offer any advice on the P/MM thing, compared to the P/J thing, especially as it might apply to a Roscoe 5er? Oh, the MM pickup would be an Aguilar as well if that makes a difference.

I can't speak for the P/MM combo but I purchased a Roscoe PJ combo with the Aguilar pups and OBP-1 preamp with Vintage Tone control is phenomenal. Absolute one of the best sounding basses I've ever had in my hands.
Cool. That's what I'm expecting from the P/J. If I could add an MM sound to the mix, that would be big icing on the big cake. But I also don't want to mess with a good thing, especially at this price point.

For a classic I’d stay P/J or J/J or P.
I think a J/MM woukd be a great “normal” Roscoe - Century, LG or SKB.
Like this perhaps...

It’s been there for a while so you may get a nice price. Greg is a great guy.

I really liked my Lakland 55-02 that had this pickup combination, Bart’s and all. It was my favorite bass next to my Roscoes.

Yeah, I think I'll stick to P/J. I've seen J/MM combinations, but rarely P/MM. I assume there's a reason, but I don't know what it is. About the only ones I found on youtube were Haeussel Jake basses, which sounded good in the demos, and one for a Schecter.

There's a video of a signature bass that Nordstrand had made with a P/MM(ish) setup. It was amazing. Check that one out. It was probably dependent on those particular pickups used though, and the placement.
