FYI - I just talked with James Demeter about my Roscoe BEQP-1 preamp, which is being built, but I came away with the impression he is about ready to retire from making those, so........
So, not to change the IEM momentum, but who amongst us has tried/owns/will buy this new BackBeat (play bass, feel bass!) module?
It is interesting. Not sure how I'd connect it with my current cabling scheme.I'm pretty intrigued by this BackBeat though.

I’ve got one of the original models. It’s called an amp and I love it!
You not suppose to strap your amp/speaker cabinet to your back!I remember that bass from a while back. The fingerboard is pretty cool. Seems like you used to see more of those a few years ago than you do now.
Keith got a huge batch of spalted Purpleheart back in 2000 and used it to make many, many basses, Most of them had quilt maple tops and Spanish Cedar bodies (which he also started using around 2000; his sale pitch to me then was "it sound's and looks similar to mahogany but is a bit more acoustic sounding"). IMO he was right.
It definitely became the look of Roscoe's for the first decade of the 21 century.
Ok, so I cycled through DR Hi Beams and I’m back to DaDdario xl nickel brites. ta Da, perfect match. I’m convinced now more than ever nickel D’Addario just sound and feel better on 35 inch scale 5 and 6 string basses that are inherently brite to begin with. The SKB sounds perfect with them. I ha to taper back the treble with the dr hi Beams. And over all the mids were lacking. Not a problem with the D’Addario xl nickels. The DR Hi Beams still sound great on my lakland us jazz. For my ears and hands it's hard to beat a nickel string (whether it's the DR Pure Blues, EB Slinky, D'addario XL or GHS Booms). The have great sounding mids and don't sound harsh (in highs or mids) like some of the SS strings do (IMO).
The D'addario XL's happen to be one of the lest expensive too. Maybe cost is a factor too.

I felt the same way with Hi Beams on a Roscoe, and I love bright and snappy. Currently favoring Dunlop super brights (nickel plated) and Elixir Stainless on Roscoes. I've yet to try a fresh set of 'oem' D'Addarios, though...

Cool! Yeah, the D'addario XL's rule on a Roscoe. Just the right combination or low, highs and mids.
Definitely need to give Keith or Rik a call and get a set or two. As the saying goes "Cheaper by the dozen"!
Without the price break on quantities it would be hard for me to keep my basses clothed with fresh strings.
On the subject of strings and Rsocoe's ........
I am totally digging the sound of the Ernie Ball Colbat flats on my fretted STD JB 5! It really has a nice old school sound (especially when playing with a pick) but retains some of the nice RW nickel sound (not really thuddy sounding like some flats can be). JohnnyR is going to loan me a set of TI Flats that he has laying around so I'll compare them to EB Flats and see which I prefer (oddly I'm the one that turned him on to the TI's; I just keep going in circles).
I especially like the sound of the flats with the neck p/u soloed. I can thank crazy man SteveC for leading me down the P-Bass (kind of) rabbit trail! It actually got my STD fretted JB listed on the for sale forum (although I'm thinking now that I might already have a bass close enough to the P-Bass sound for me).
IMO it really justifies owning more than one Roscoe fretted bass.
On another subject (going to cover a few with one thread post), has anyone replaced their STD model Hipshot Type B bridge with a Type A (Lately)?
I've replaced one on a Custom before and just had Keith send me one but in examining the one on my Custom (and comparing it to the one on my STD's) I find that the staggered height base might be an issue when installing a Roscoe Hipshot bridge on a STD model bass. It may make my string height too high (with a fairly significant [thk] shim).
The Hipshot Type A on BESTBASSGEAR.com site are not staggered height (at the base) and match the min/max height adjustments of the Type B. Another thing that I noticed is we Roscoeheads have always been told that the standard spacing on the 5 strings was 18.3mm. Hipshot does have a standard bridge with that spacing, but it's physical dimensions are larger (4.04 x 2.00). Of course I know that Keith has one specially made, but when I measure my string spacing on both my STD and Custom Roscoe's it's 18mm (on both; if you center the string guide on the Type A). That's .708 for the mathematically challenged. And the .708 model on Hipshot's web site matches the physical size of the Type A on my Custom model (3.967 x 2.00).
What's up with that?!?
So my question is, did Roscoe change their standard string spacing for a 5 string from 18.3mm to 18mm?
Muscle memory is very sensitive and can detect minute changes!!![]()
To put the spacing in perspective, the difference between 18.3 and 19.0 mm is about 0.0276 inches. That means across a six string the total difference across all six strings is about 0.138 inches (just over 1/8 inch). Across a five string the total difference is about 0.110 inches.
A change from 18.3 to 18.0 across a fiver equates to a total difference of about 0.047 inches
You guys have some seriously sensitive fingers.......
