Roscoe Club

Greg, from everything that I've read Dave played pretty much exclusively stock P-basses during those first 3 albums. I think he may have used flats on the first album and switched to Roto-Sound Swing bass on the next 2 but I believe that he still used the P-bass on all of those albums. I doubt that he would have used one bass in the studio and another live (mainly because those basses play so differently).
But I also agree that there are some pics of him holding a Ric (and Paul Goddard of ARS [who toured some with Kansas] totally adored Kansas and in the later years of ARS he favored a Ric).
I'll have to ask a friend of mine that did a tour with Kansas in 1977-78 if he remembers what pass Hope played then.
I agree that it sounds a lot like a Ric but back in the day we did several Yes tunes and I came really close to the Ric sound with Roto-Sound Swing bass strings on my P-bass.

Well, somebody needs to go interview that dude while he's still around! LOL

I'd love to learn more about his gear. Basses, amps, strings, mics and consoles in the studio, etc. The tone is so incredible. And there seems to be zero info on the interwebs.

Okay, here’s one. I posted a Sadowsky MV5 and I get asked if this was a Metro.

Is there anything wrong with the bass?
Why you selling it?
What’s the exact weight?
Do you have sound clips?
If only it was a 4 string....
If only it were a 5 string.....
If only it were a 6 string......
Does the truss rod work?
Did you buy it new?
If only it were a 34" scale!
If only it were a 35 " scale!
If only it were a 32" scale!
Has it ever been submerged under water for more than 3 mins?

I have to go back and re-listen, but while I agree with you @RocketMusic that it's a very Chris Squire like (therefore Ric) tone on that track, I definitely agree with @JOME77 that some P basses with the right strings (i.e. Rotos) can do that tone very well. It requires a bit more scoop in either the pickup, preamp/EQ, or both since the P is inherently more midrange-y with the single pickup between the two Ric positions.

That doesn't stop me from wanting a Ric or something with at least that pickup placement to chase those tones, but being realistic a P is probably the next best bass to try for that goal.

Yeah, I was telling Joe offline today that I'm going to have to get some RotoSounds and put them on one of my non-main-player P's. Maybe between the strings and using a pick in just the right spot with the right amp settings will get me that sound. Which would be cool.

For me the biggest issue is that it requires playing Rotosounds and with a pick. I love the sound but hate doing either of those things as far as my hands are concerned.
