Roscoe Club

Just snagged a cool pedal. Initial test and thoughts... very nice , very musically rich compression. Better than i was expecting. It works very well with my ideas of good tone is It’s killer at at lower and normal somewhat noonish settings. It has a unique high expansion that controls the highs and it goes from normal high tones to extended and rich ,not brash or cold . basically a very effective highs eq knob that brings in clarity and a richness. I had absolutely incredible tones just now that worked with the rig perfectly. It was inspiring to play. I played this for 2 hrs before snapped the pic. I couldn’t put it down it was so f’n good. So more test later to see how it goes super loud and with the pedal rig. Yeah cheap thrills uh huh +1 ole DOD

The main element of encouragement for me to move forward in commissioning a Roscoe bass is my ongoing relationship with Roscoe Guitars. They provided Plek services on several of my existing basses, as well as encouraged and performed customizations. Collaborative dialogues, enjoyable interactions, Roscoe’s positive service mindset, and excellent results from different members of the Roscoe crew built a level of trust with me to help in deciding whether or not to proceed.

Another encouraging element for ordering a custom Roscoe is my experience playing 5-string Roscoe Standard and Custom SKBs, LGs, and Centuries the past couple years. They varied in wood and finish types, electronics, and pickup placement. I had a blast experimenting with sound, enjoying playability and ergonomics, experiencing much musical enjoyment.

On occasion I grabbed a ruler, measuring and documenting attributes between like basses, learning of similarities and differences. Most of these reflected initial build specifications, while some were related to hand building during different eras.

Finally, all during this time I have combed through this Roscoe Club thread, enjoying other Roscoe user experiences and commentary, learning as much as I could. After all of this, I placed an order for a Roscoe SKB Custom 5. Here is a photo of the pre-made rough-cut body that I chose. It is a maple top joined to an ash back.

What are you thinking for finish? Those quilts are going to look gorgeous!

What kinda guts are you going with? Pickups? Come on man! I just gotta know the deets!

Have been working on the "slow reveal," restraining my urge to blurt it all out. Will release more details with photos as the bass evolves, but will happily answer your questions, as you have been kind in sharing, too. The bass will have a natural gloss finish. Pickups will be Roscoe Bart soapbars with Bart three-band pre (my fave pickup and preamp combo of all time).

haha, I hear ya!

Natural gloss is going to look nice, especially with that top.

You know, I've been really thinking about having Keith take the old 2 band Bart preamp out of my fretless LG and replace it with the 3 band. But I'm hesitant as I really love the way it sounds now. Perhaps when the tone pots start to show their age and die out, I'll have him do it.

I'm not often negative, but... (don't worry, it isn't about any of these amazing builds)

I bought the wife and myself tickets for Tower of Power for tonight, but I purchased back in early December. I immediately put on my band calendar that I wasn't available to gig tonight the day I bought the tickets.

Fast forward to now. I'm checking the gig calendar this week, wondering why I have blocked out Saturday the 6th (can you guess where this is heading?). Never put it on my family calendar, too late to get a sitter. It's a chunk of money, yes, but it was also a cool experience with a band I've never seen and now I miss out on it. I must need better adulting skills...ugh. It starts in 23 minutes if you know any Naperville area peeps that want 5th row seats.
