Roscoe Club

I installed my 2nd set of D’Addario Chromes on a passive jazz configured bass. No adjustments to the bridge saddles, nut or neck were required. Although the bass has through-body stringing, I didn’t use that feature due to the wrappings on the ball end. I’m looking forward to hearing it in service this Sunday to compare it to the LG.
That’s two basses with Chromes!

Ray, I’ve strung 2 basses string thru with Chrome flats. 9 months and no issues. I think that it’s more dependent on the size/type string core.

It was a tight fit to string through, so I didn’t want to force it!!
The low B is still tight, which was what so was concerned about with a 34 inch scale 5’er bass.

Happy Roscoe Friday. Mutale Chashi on Roscoe bass with Jorja Smith band:

13,000,000 views: whoa. Also, see Ricky Rodriguez, reportedly playing his Roscoe bass, with the SNL band this weekend. Enjoy

Nice groove too (on the 1st tune)!
I've recently run into a couple players that play using that flamingo plucking technique (thumb and fingers). Very interesting. I've tried it some but I had trouble getting a balanced sound out of all the notes. I guess like any new technique it takes some wood shedding to perfect.

Thanks for sharing Fritz!

Settle down, Ray. Let's not get too excited. Lest flatwounds become the new roundwounds! How about trying some nice half-wounds for a change?:)

‘Half-wounds’? Right now these Chromes have my attention.
Go back in time with me. 1977. I put D'Addario half wounds on my '73 Rickenbacker 4001. I auditioned with a band and they hired me on the spot. My bass sounded just like "Sweet Emotion" from Aerosmith. I was previously using Rotosound strings for the Chris Squire sound. Try them and see what sound you get.

Edit: Actually, it was "Walk this Way".

I think all this talk of flats needs to get off my lawn!! :D:laugh:

Seriously though, I’ve tried flats, though not on a Roscoe - Chromes on a Modulus Flea 5 and TIs on a Fender P5 - and initially liked them quite a bit on each bass. After awhile, I missed the feel and sound of the Elixirs I’ve grown to love and switched back. Elixirs seem to have a love ‘em or hate ‘em rep around TB, but they’re just right for me.

I had flats on my fretless LG for a little while, (chromes FWIW) but after a while I wanted a bit more bite and top end. I now run GHS Pressure wounds on my fretless. They are so much nicer. I'm going to try them on the fretted PJ, I'm looking forward to hearing how they sound!.

I’ve never tried pressure wounds or half wounds and actually ran rounds on the two fretless basses I’ve had. I did have a bass with tapewounds on it years and years ago when I was a kid just starting out on bass. I remember they were red, felt like plastic, and sounded very thuddy. I’ve never felt the need to experiment with tapes again.

Nowadays, I’m not one for zing and lots of top end from strings, but flats just don’t have enough of either for me. I’ve seen a lot of positive comments on the EB Cobalt flats and them sounding very round-ish, but I’m unwilling to stray from Elixirs to experiment with flats again.

I've noticed no mention of the popular DR strings. I tried most of them. Lo Riders, Fat Beams, High Beams, Sun Beams, etc. Yes, they are all great strings. So many choices that by the time you've tried one, you've forgotten what the old ones sound like. It's a fun, but expensive ride to try them all.

The strings on my new Roscoe reminds me how good D'Addario strings sound.
