Roscoe Club

I've noticed no mention of the popular DR strings. I tried most of them. Lo Riders, Fat Beams, High Beams, Sun Beams, etc. Yes, they are all great strings. So many choices that by the time you've tried one, you've forgotten what the old ones sound like. It's a fun, but expensive ride to try them all.

The strings on my new Roscoe reminds me how good D'Addario strings sound.

It’s been awhile, but I’ve always liked DRs and D’Addarios. I’m one of those folks that can kill a set of strings dead on the quick, so I’ve stuck with coated strings for quite sometime now. I am somewhat interested in trying out the relatively new D’Addario XT coated strings. I’ve played DR coated strings on other folks basses and was not a fan of the feel/texture at all. They seemed very grabby to me.

Definitely appreciate everyone's string-tone and string-feel quest. The answer for me is clear according to my practice and experience: standard-gauge Roscoe D'Addario rounds, at least for five-string bass.

I love the tone, balance, and overall feel of the Roscoe rounds. Buying them directly from Roscoe Guitars makes them a great cost-saving deal, and just another reason to phone, and talk with the Roscoe crew.

Don't get me wrong. I like what you guys like. . . for you. . .

I don’t even run flats on my fretless. Love the mwah from the D’Addario nickel rounds.

I ended up using EB Cobalt flats on my fretless bass. Oddly, as much as I love the mwah in the solo mode, I found that too much mwah in a live mix causes the bottom to just drop out. These days I go more for the growl of a fretless (the swell). The EB Cobalt flats are kind of in between traditional flats and nickel rounds.

I think that Ray can testify to this (he played my fretless at the last GTG). With the Cobalt flats it maintains nice growl all the way up into the upper resister.

As for rounds, honestly, I've come to the conclusion that I'm wasting my money on anything other than the D'addario XL nickels (or Fender nickels which are made by D'addario). They just have the nice round tone with just the right touch of emphasis on the mids. And they cost 25-50% less than some of the other brands (DR, Elixir ...).

Of course then again I could be wrong. Strings, like many things are a personal choice.;)

I liked the Cobalt Flats on the fretless but for some reason Ernie Ball of all people cannot figure out how to make a 0.030" C string, so I wound up leaving the D'Addario HalfRound C. It was OK, for as much as I actually play anything on the Hi-C, but suboptimal as far as uniform tone and feel. I still have a set and may try them on my fretted 5 at some point. Switched to TI Jazz Flats on the fretless and I'm really liking them. I mostly play blues, classic rock, and Americana/country and it is possible to have 'too much mwah' if you're trying to 'sound fretted.' (String height tweaks make it pretty controllable...)

Your fretless was special! I tried to come with it, too. :)
I’m more inclined to think paring the right strings with a bass trumps personal string choice.
Maybe the Chromes I installed on my passive jazz bass (preamp/pups) need more break-in time, but I wasn’t as impressed with the sound of them on the jazz as I am with the Roscoe LG with the Demeter pre.

The Chromes do need a break in time Ray. I put them on my passive Jazz two times before I started liking them on that bass. In the end I reasoned that it must have been the break-in time. I've heard others say the same thing.

Does the current bassist on SNL use a Roscoe? It's been so long since I've watched that show that I have no clue who even plays on it.
No, the normal players uses a Fodera, but there was a sub last night, (Ricky Rodriguez) and he plays an SKB (edit- it's a straight P/U LG, and I've hazed myself for my mistake).

This is from the Roscoe Guitars FB page:

I have a non-bass/strings/pedal question for this thread and I hope to get good responses before the TB Patrolmen show up.

Anyone owning an iMac and have used software utility(ies) to cleanup the hard drive to reclaim system space?
