Roscoe Club

As a Yankee in New England, I will root for Auburn. My oldest daughter likes tigers :)

As for Gard, he's fine. He has to focus on Seattle now (gulp)!

As a Pats fan, seeing Andrew Luck Saturday makes me nervous!

Note: I really do love college football and as a New Englander all we have is Boston College, which is not very much. My oldest daughter is looking into colleges & part of me wishes she could go to a big football program school, most likely that would be South or Far West and I don't want to go that far away from home. I was actually encouraging her to look at Clemson just for the football program. Does that make me a bad father? :)

I'm actually looking at Clemson for baseball for my son. :)

All right everybody, who is going to win tomorrow?

FSU or Auburn?

SEC vs. ACC?

Auburn. FSU looks great, but against what competition? Auburn had to play big boy football; FSU had to beat Wake Forest.

(...and when I end up being wrong, everyone can laugh...but I'm stickin' by it for now! ;) )

Also-

Have you caught your breathe yet Gard? That was a close one.

When Keenan Lewis went down, things got touchy. Until then, I was not worried, the Saints D was locking down everything the Eagles tried. Still held the #2 offense in the NFL to 258 yards total, and kept Shady McCoy under 80 yards rushing.

Once we got the ball back with just under 5 minutes left, and were ripping off 7-8 yards per carry running the ball, I knew the jig was up for Chipster and his gimmick offense. :smug: ;)

Jimmy plays the way he does because, even now at his current stature in the music industry, he sheds almost constantly: before meals, after meals, before the soundcheck, after the soundcheck, after the gig... I've seen this first-hand on several occasions. Every time I think I've practiced "enough", I think about that and keep going, and that's the only thing that's made a difference in my skill, noticeable by my band mates and friends. It's also significantly minimized (although not eliminated) my GAS. Jimmy could've played just as inspirationally on YJ albums with a 4- or 5-string...

I hope this helps you in your search for the perfect bass (which does not exist).

Oh, I know. It's not the bass but the player. I had a lesson with Jimmy that was amazing. I have tons to work on - as we all do. I think I have basically convinced myself that I am a 5 string guy. Yeah, a 6 would be nice for some things, but really, I can do everything I need on my 5. It's only missing 5 notes on top. For the "Jackets" stuff I try, I can do all but maybe 3 sections in the "correct" octave. Some things would be "easier" on a 6, but they are certainly doable on a 5 - especially since those tunes only get played in my basement by me along with my favorite recordings.

And yes, there is no one perfect bass. Roscoe's are as close as I've found. I love my current one and only…

…and even though I have tried to sell it (my intentions are good but "karma" seems to be keeping this bass with me) I think now I have decided to take most EVERYONE'S advice and make it a keeper. Not much I can't do with this bass.

As a matter of fact, I am thinking that I should go back/stick to my intent from about a year ago which was have a nice pair of 5 string basses - fretted and fretless - and call it good. I looked into buying back this fretless (that I sold to try finance a 6 one more time) but I couldn't make it work.

I bet Gard could get another like this going with no trouble at all. :help:

They do make a nice pair…

I had a lesson with Jimmy that was amazing.

He's an amazing dude. So generous with his time and expertise. Salt of the earth. He's inspired me to really push myself when I practice. One thing he wrote to me is cemented in my brain: "SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE HAVING SOME FUN and GOOD TIMES PLAYING MUSIC . . . . NEED MORE . . . GOOD VIBES FOR THE PLANET . . . MUSIC HEALS!!!!"

Regarding the rest of your post, I think PacMan put it best:

Less Ebay, more Mel Bay.

:bassist:

Just made the jump from 4 to 6, oddly enough at age 46...

I can see it's going to take some time, and a lot more shedding, but I'm already hooked.

This is a CS 3006 (#4030) that's been making the rounds here. I'm glad I nabbed it, but I'm also keeping my LG 3000 ;)

Just put a new set of D'Addario EXL170-6 on this beast and tightened the truss rod a smidge and now I cannot put it down... not that it was seeing much case time before.

I don't know what strings were on it before but they were quite a bit heavier, too heavy for this bass, I think., at least for jazz.

Your sixer brings up memories of when I had a beautiful 6 six string.

I loved that bass. It's so nice to have ALL the options a six can provide. I'm jeAlous of those whose hands can handle it. Mine just can't.

But I am pleased with my roscoe shorty. Only bass I've used since I got it. ImageUploadedByTalkBass1389767140.670464.jpg

Joe - how's the new fretless?

Hey Keith!
I won't know until tomorrow. It's due for delivery tomorrow. It's got everything on my wish list except it's a Standard + in lieu of a custom. But it's got all my preferred woods (and oil finish) and electronics. Holding my breath a bit on the JJ configuration but I've got a really good feeling about it. Gard and Steve gave it a thumbs up. It'll probably sound a bit more focused than the soap bars but as long as it has that Roscoe growl and mwah I'll be good. :)

I'll record a sound clip with it this weekend and post it (and of course the proof pic's).

Right turn Clyde! :D

Glad you are digging it Corey. It is a wonderful bass.

As some TBer's know, I formally retired from gigging as of January 1st, after 41 years without a break. I thought I had one more year in me, but just couldn't do the road trips any more, and got tired of being the oldest guy on the gig! Cancelled/subbed out the gigs I had booked already for 2014, and stopped taking any new gigs. Strange but, at this point, good feeling.

Sold everything but my favorite bass and amp. It was fun to take this journey to a nice, gentle landing with that Roscoe over the last year or so. Wonderful instrument, and I'm glad I had a chance to gig it.

Fun ride and I wouldn't change a thing over the last 40+ years. I very much enjoyed my time on Talkbass also. Nice bunch of folks here.

Cheers!

Well I finally got another Roscoe fretless. I got everything on my wish list except it’s a Standard instead of a custom. But based on how this bass sounds and looks I can certainly live with that!

It arrived Thursday and after giving it a fresh oil change, new set of strings and a thorough setup I’m quite pleased and impressed. This one setup up with the lowest action of any fretless basses that I’ve owned. It’s around .03 for the G string at the 24th position to around .06 for the low B. Even with the action that low all of the notes sing wonderfully all over the neck. It is a bit of an adjustment playing it with action that low (a little goes a long way!) but it’s so expressive! Ever finger movement affects the emotion of the note.

I was a little nervous about the JJ P/U’s on a Roscoe fretless but any reservations concerning that were gone after a few minutes of playing it through my amp. Tones of mwah and growl
I’ve got lots of woodshedding to do but this one is indeed a keeper! This one came to me compliments of TB’er Strost. Thanks Steve!

Here’s a couple pic’s and a short sound clip of it in “Midnight Rider”. I used it on the first verse of the song. All the other bass parts were played on my Koa LG-3005.
