Roscoe Club

Thanks for the helpful reply. I had another stupid idea meanwhile... the bass comes with Sperzel tuners as well, which are then from either the 80s or 90s... would replacing these by let s say hipshot ultra lites save some weight? :D I am more and more considering 11.5 lbs is not that bad but if I could save a bit more that would be even better :smug:
I put Gotoh Res O Lites on and I love them. Shaved almost a half pound off the headstock vs the older Gotoh tuners. They are lighter than Hipshots and I prefer the action on them to Hipshots. Just my opinion but I dont think you can find a better tuner.

I completely agree. Just got a bass with gotoh res o lite and i love them. Smooth action and stay in tune, what more can you expect :D

I think this thread may be of some help to you as it lists the weight and other details of large number of bass tuners, including Sperzel's and Ultralite's.

Tuner weights revisited: GB350, Ultralites, GB707, etc.

Thanks. I had seen this thread already, and I was wondering if older Sperzel tuners from 80s/90s were as light as the ones mentioned in the thread as they look quite massive to me.

The last couple days I've been playing my Roscoe through my new Mesa rig and totally loving the tones that I can get. One thing that I really noticed though is that since installing the new Nordstrand preamp in my Roscoe the passive tone of the bass is really great. I guess that in the time since I installed the preamp I really only verified that it worked in the passive mode and really haven't done that much comparisons between it and the active tone. I'm quite surprised that the passive output level (with the output mini-pot adjusted properly on the Nord pre) is almost exactly the same output level as the active mode (with the EQ controls set close to flat).
That's something that was not the case with the Bartolini preamp (if you configured it with an Active/passive switch). Most of the long term Roscoe users will remember that Roscoe stated many times that because of the low impedance of the Roscoe Bart p/u's they didn't offer the active/passive function (or recommend it). Well apparently that was more due to the design of the Bartolini preamp and not the custom pickups because that's just not the case using the Nordstrand preamp with the Roscoe Bart p/u's on my bass.
The passive tone of this bass is now really good and the passive tone control offers quite a lot of tone variance.

Just thought that I'd throw this out there just in case any of you guys wanted to add a great passive tone to your Roscoe bass (or want the the insurance that in the case of a battery or preamp failure you could still play the gig).

Thanks for reporting that, Joe.

I have my bass (custom Roscoe Barts p/us + Bart pre) configured with a passive tone and was thinking about adding a passive/active switch for a little more variance, but I'll keep it as it is and look into Nordstrands.

If you don't mind me asking, what's your knob layout after replacing the preamp?

Hey Andy.
The preamp is a 4 knob configuration and is thus preamp:

Nordstrand 3B-4a - Best Bass Gear

I was reluctant to go with the vol/vol configuration but it was the only way to get the A/P on the passive tone pot. In the end though I really believe the vol/vol gives you more usable sounds. The blend control changes everything to quickly. I hear a slow blend more with the vol/vol configuration.

Awesome, Joe.
Thanks for the link! I appreciate it.

I don't mind vol/vol at all.
Personally I'd be more concerned about drilling thru the wood to implement the a/p switch - right now I have vol/tone stacked - mid p/p - blend - treble/bass stacked.

Just glad I'd be able to keep the same layout and an easier/no-drilling-required install.

Looking at Nordstrand's frequency points for bass and treble, I guess I actually prefer those to the NTMB's.

Andy. One thing that I will add is that you will have to purchase 2 stacked knob sets that match your stock Roscoe knobs. But that is much better than drilling additional holes!:)

Have you guys noticed that TB allows you less time to edit a post now?
If I noticed a misspelled word or missing word in a post in the past I was able to change it several days later. Now it appears to be just a few hours or so.

@SteveC Did they recently make a change in that area?

I don’t know. I don’t remeber any talk about it, but I’m not always up to date. I did notice in a PM that I thought I was locked out from editing rather quickly.

That changed several months ago. I read that you now have 30 minutes to made any edits to a post. I detest re-reading something I typed and discover spelling or grammar errors.

If anyone's looking for a 4 string, this isn’t a bad deal (not mine)...
