Roscoe Club

I've had my Roscoe for about a few weeks now, bought used. I've been playing it to DEATH! Right now my job is playing for a theater so many hours a day have been going into it. The back of the neck is already wearing through, is there a remedy for this?

A quick question for Roscoe experts:

What are the general characteristics of/tone differences between Pau Ferro, Chechen, and African Tulipwood fretboards?

I've owned several Roscoes over the years and and am considering having another SKB Custom 5 built. I'm probably going with an Ash body, Quilted Maple top, and the Aguilar DCB/OBP-3 system.

I'm very familiar with the look, feel, and general tone of Pau Ferro but Chechen and African Tulipwood are very interesting aesthetically. Just wondering what the Roscoe community thinks about these different fretboards to complement these tone woods.

Thanks!

I had this built a few years ago; Ash body, Quilted Maple top, and the Aguilar OBP-3 system and went with the Wenge fretboard. Just another option to consider.

My Buckeye Burl SKB has a wenge board and ash body and I love the tone despite being a maple board enthusiast (almost exclusively). Still, you could also match the woods aesthetically and not go wrong since I've never heard a bad sounding Roscoe.

What do you mean by wearing through, wood, finish? Load some pictures so we can see what you are talking about.

It's common for the satin finish on the neck to "gloss up" quite a bit as the bass is played. To take it back to satin, you can lightly rub it with steel wool. Or you can just leave it glossy if it doesn't bug you.

I'm not sure if that's what you're experiencing, but that seems more likely to me than actually wearing through the neck finish (which should be quite durable).

This one sounds killer with a pau ferro board. But, if it were me, I'd go with wenge.

That said, I just installed a set of DCBs and OBP-3 in my SKB3005. I finally found that sound in my head. This bass is never leaving me. FWIW, it has an ash body, myrtle top and Macassar ebony board. I think the ebony really adds that middy bark that I like.

How do you like the Aggie DCBs vs the Roscoe Barts? My SKB3005 has a mahogany body, maple top, wenge fretboard, and Roscoe Barts with the Aggie OBP-3. It really growls and has nice mid projection but a bit darker in the highs, definitely not bright like ash/maple. Wondered what the difference in pickup voicing was like?

My bass went from Nordy DCs/OBP-3 => Nordy DCs/Pope => Aggie DCBs/OBP-3. I also have a Century 3006 with Roscoe Barts/Bart pre and ash body, maple board to compare to. The Century is about as classic a Roscoe sound as you can get.

I wasn't big on the the first iteration of my SKB. It sounded fine, maybe a close comparison to Bart CBs. But, there was some mud in the top end. I thought the pickups just needed to be opened up more so, I went with a Pope preamp which I figured was as transparent as I could get. I was wrong. I had to EQ the bejesus out of it to get a usable tone. The mids were almost uncontrollable.

I played one of Greg's basses with DCBs at the last GTG and fell in love. So, I ripped out the guts out of mine and put a brand new set it. Wow, they changed everything. I've found the best tone is flat, maybe a smidge of bass. The top end doesn't have the mud that it had before.

Compared to the Barts it's like Roscoe with even more Roscoe. The Aggies have all the good stuff the Barts have just more of it. And, I might even say they are a cleaner sounding if that makes any sense.

I'll post up a country tune I worked on in a little bit. I pretty much live on the B string the whole time but, you'll get the idea.
