Yeah when Keith set up my basses I feel like he is trying to put the strings on the back of the necks. A tech I use at fret works in Portland is amazed at how low you can get the action!! Butter baby!!!!Armybass I remember that bass from Rocket Music !!! That jewel was on a few Heads wish list!!!!! Mine included

I don't set mine up as low as some. I like to dig a little when I play.

I used stock D'Addarios on fretless but DR hi beams on fretted.

Do most of you stick with the D'Addarios that come from the factory or have you found other brands that work as well or better?

DR Black Beauties on all of them. I never liked the stock D'Addarios.

I use the D'Addarios on my fretless five and fretted six string and DR Black Beauties on my fretted five. The DRs have lower tension than the D'As and take a little more patience getting them setup. I couldn't get the DRs low enough on the fretless so, I put them on my other five instead with no problems. Once my travel bass is finished it will have neon orange DRs.

I use DR Sunbeams 40-120 on my 5. Right now on my 4 I have Sadowsky Blue Nickels.

I've never had a length issue with DR. I don't care for the coated strings as much either but love the Hi Beams.

Hi beams on mine, and FatBeams on my JJ. I have Black Beauties on my PJ, but I'm not sure how long that's going to last.

I like the stock D'Addarios but not so much the gauges. My CS4+PJ gets Fodera Compressed Round Wound Nickel Plated Steel in the Extra Light gauge (0.040-0.095). My CS4J fretless has TI flats.

My fretted 5s get Black Beauties 0.040, 0.060, 0.080, 0.100, 0.125 but I may switch to Sunbeams. I like the feel of the BBs and definitely like the look, but I don't like the sound as they wear as much.

I like the D'ads and really like the Hi Beams but I kill 'um quick so it's Elixirs for me. Wish they had more options for extra long scale as I'd like to get away from the tapered B on my SKB-3005 but they sound good and have outlasted anything else I have ever had - going on 10 months and the E string is just now starting to fade. I'm a fan.

I use Ken Smith Stainless Steel Round Wounds. They last forever. Except for the high strings, they've been on my Roscoe's for years. I don't like that grindy metal new string sound. They hold their pitch, so there's no reason to change them. Might be the last strings you'll ever have to buy.

I think you probably already know this, but just in case -

If you like the sound, but the strings are too tight, a lighter set will probably loosen them up.
Personally, I prefer my strings pretty loose, so I solve any tension problem by tuning the strings down.

I strung up my new to me Roscoe with DR black beauties last week for a gig. I dont care for them. I found them to have too harsh of a feel for me.
I use sunbeams on my beat up Alembic, and like them, so I think ill try them on the Roscoe next.
