Run to Death

MatticusMania said:
I think youre missing Chebass' point. All they saw was a little girl running... why exactly would that provoke someone to intervene? Intervene in what exactly? How was anyone to suspect what was going on?

If thats all they saw, the police would not have been able to bring charges. These people testified to the abuse. What is so difficult to understand about that?

The article specifically said they saw a little girl running in her yard. Unless they spent hours closely watching her (which would be damned creepy I might add) they most likely thought she was playing of her own volition, with proper rest and hydration. After the kid died, most likely the cops approached the neighbors and asked them if they'd witnessed anything.

Exactly. Plus, if I know someone personally, I try to give them the benefit of the doubt and not assume the worse about them if I don't know something for a fact..

This:

All they saw was her running. If you can classify running as abuse then I know a couple hundred people daily abusing themselves at the track.
Im fairly certain the neighbors only realized this was some form of abuse after the fact.
Hey, next time you see a little kid running in their yard go right ahead and intervene.

I thought they confessed to making her run? That plus cause of death is enough for charges even without testimony.
But they will get off easy. How are can you prove they intended to kill her? It will be abuse, neglect, manslaughter, cruelty to children, and maybe some other charges, but murder won't stick here, unfortunately.

This is awful, but I do have questions because it seems like it wasn't a situation where a person is sitting in a deck chair with an umbrella, ice cold lemonade and an megaphone saying "you better not stop!" But I believe there is negligence on the part of the grandmother and step mother at the very least because they know the child and they didn't not watch out for her and monitor what was going on.

Simpson said he saw a little girl running at around 4 p.m., but didn't see anybody chasing or coercing her.

"I saw her running down there, that's what I told the detectives," Simpson said from his home on a hill overlooking the Hardins. "But I don't see how that would kill her."

Please read carefully:

" Witnesses told deputies Savannah was told to run and not allowed to stop for three hours on Friday, an Etowah County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said."

OK but also:

*Simpson said he saw a little girl running at around 4 p.m., but didn't see anybody chasing or coercing her.

Sloppy reporting, incompetence police spokeswoman, could be anything. But no, one sentence in one news article with a third hand statement... definitive proof.

Who are these witnesses, and how do they know that she "was told to run and not allowed to stop for three hours"?

"Roger Simpson said he looked down the road and saw a little girl running outside her home but didn't give it another thought"

This may also be a case of media pulling into a community and just asking people if they saw anything, and they always say "yeah, I saw, blah, blah,blah.." and you find out later that they didn't see anything to speak of.

You're reading way too much into a single poorly phrased line in a single article dmusic.

I don't think so. If you ignore Roger Simpson, it becomes clear. You are confusing what Roger Simpson(casual observer) and "several concerned citizens" said with EYEWITNESS TESTIMONY. Roger Simpson and the 'concerned citizens' had no way of knowing these details:

"...Savannah was told to run and not allowed to stop for three hours on Friday,..."

"...the girl was made to run after lying to her grandmother,..."

"(She was)forced to run for three hours as punishment for having lied to her grandmother about eating candy bars."...

"Deputies were told the girl was made to run after lying to her grandmother, 46-year-old Joyce Hardin Garrard, about having eaten the candy."

So who told the deputies these things? Certainly not Roger Simpson or the 'concerned citizens.'

The only people that would have known these details were other people in the home. Probably other kids, which is why they aren't releasing their names.

There is no way in hell that the women would be locked up and held on $500,000 bond based on heresay from neighbors and 'concerned citizens.' There were actual, reliable witnesses with facts and real details.

You need to read it again. Forget Simpson; he's not one of the witnesses I'm talking about.
There are other, unnamed witnessed who claim to know EXACTLY what happened.

Thats the rub, WHO ARE THESE WITNESSES? And what exactly do they know?

Clearly the witnesses are not the neighbors, as we know what they saw, and thats not enough to know there was some abuse to intervene in. Which is exactly where you mistook Chebass' point, as he was not speaking about people who have inside information, but rather the ones looking from the outside in, like the neighbors.

So who told the deputies these things? Certainly not Roger Simpson or the 'concerned citizens.'

I have to check the article again, but I believe it said that the suspects admitted to what they did, so it likely came from the step mother and grandmother.
