Rush Limbaugh and the Rams

...The Onion is satire, The Rush Limbaugh Show, well, I don't think so.
Agreed. No one that reads the Onion is going to take any of that stuff seriously. I can easily see many people latching on to Limbaugh's vitriol and taking what he says as gospel. Many of the people associated with the far right are also people who are so stringently religious (though many choose to not practice what they preach, but that's a different thread, on a different forum), and many of whom, at least in my area are in a lower Socioeconomic subset, and have very little education. Those are the people that take thing that people like Limbaugh (or Moore, for some of them, just to be fair), and take those words as gospel. That's when the things said can become dangerous.

I'm sincerely trying not to generalize too much, but in rural northeastern Pennsylvania, people DO take things said as truth and gospel, I assure you. I have been a psychotherapist for many years, and a great deal (vast majority) of my caseload over those years were low-income families in very rural areas. In MY experience the lower they are in terms of SES, the more religious they are, the more racist or vicious they are, the more right wing they are. With that comes either a desire, or a need, or whatever, to latch on to the words of some politcal commentator.

I guess my frustration is with the NFL and it's double standards. Here is a pro sports organization that reinstates habitual problem children with some degree of regularity. That doesn't seem to bother anyone in the front office, the NFLPA, or the owners

Thank you, I couldnt agree more: I said the same thing on the first page of this thread (although my post was aimed primarily at the NFLPA). And I would include MLB here as well when we are talking 'ownership club' double standards.

I get that NFL owners can do what they want when it comes to inclusion/exclusion into their circle. Its to be expected that anyone who could potentially hurt their finely tuned business plan would be eliminated from consideration- and I also get that what Limbaugh said on 'NFL Countdown' was wrong and insensitive to McNabb & others... I'm certainly not defending him, but rather the idea of 'second chances' doesnt always apply to everyone in the NFL.

But- I think its hilarious that the NFLPA and its members are so quick to forget their own deeds and the damage they have done to others as to jump on the condemn-someone-else bandwagon

Things seemed to get better every year until recently. Now, everything is about race. I am getting tired of it. :atoz:

If you are surprised that most black really dislike Rush Limbaugh, and if you think concern about race is something new, then you probably do not know what is going with people who are not like you as well you might think you do.

The fact that it needs (apparently) to be pointed out that it's blacks is his point? Why can't it just be people??? :rollno: No one goes around maybe specifying that white people really dislike Michael Moore!

Why is funny that an organization should express an opinion about an individual when said individual has uttered very negative things about your entire membership? Because a few of your members have made mistakes? So the punishment for the crimes of a few individuals should result in the muzzling of organizations that have ex-offenders in them?

If I were a member of an organization, and my leadership missed an opportunity to tweak a nemesis, I would be ticked. Maybe you want your football players to be on the meek and timid side, I prefer mine to be willing to mix it up a little.

Because I and many others feel that there is a strong racial aspect to a lot of what Limbaugh talks about. Obviously, many don't see it that way. The thing that is so funny to me is that Rush often talks about race and racial topics, but his admirers always see him as "colorblind." The only people who are race conscious are the people who don't see things his way.

BTW, since I was the one who started this thread, I will remind everyone that I have no problem with Rush owning a team since I don't think his politics are any different from a significant percentage of the owners. It was the owners and the Commissioner (a man married to a Fox news reporter) that gave him the boot.

Of course. On the football field. Not in a club packing a 9, at home beating the snot out of their partners, or alongside a dogfighting ring, etc.

Hines Ward is arguably the toughest wide receiver to ever play the game. Troy Polamalu is arguably the best safety on the field playing today. They both have squeaky clean records. It can be done.

Where did I say I was surprised blacks don't like Rush or concern about race is something new? I simply stated things seem much worse lately, not better, and I am tired of race being such an issue in America. Rush is being punished by Al Sharpton and the NFL for being a conservative and most blacks are not conservative. Seems pretty obvious to me. He is being slandered and lied about in order to make him look bad. This isn't a black or white issue. It is a right or wrong issue.

I agree with you. I see a lot of (not satirical) racist comments being made by him. But, to me at least, responding to his alleged racial slurs with a race card is just propagating the cycle.

I agree here too.

You missed my point Eric. I don't want the NFLPA to back down from speaking out on topics that concern their membership. I do want players to abide by the laws of the land.

I said it yesterday (I think in this thread, actually)... I'm a horible multi-tasker sometimes. I saw that last sentence you wrote and ran with it. Sorry. :atoz:

... I need to stay off TB while at work! :p

Why is ridiculous that an organization should express an opinion about an individual when said individual has uttered very negative things about your entire membership?

You are missing my point completely- and by hilarious I mean ridiculous (sorry if I was unclear), so I fixed your quote to better answer your question:

Its ridiculous in my opinion- not because of the outrage of certain players that are truly offended by RL and his comments that he espouses on a regular basis- but rather by the group as a whole that looks beyond their own outrageous behaviour & criminal track record when it serves their own purposes...

Whether you believe that the Rush Limbaugh deserves whatever he deserves or that the NFL is right or wrong isnt my point, but if you believe that the NFLPA should condemn anyone with the track record that they have... well then I guess denial really is a river in Egypt :)

Exactly... no one expects the entire league to be perfect- we are talking about one of the most violent sports there is. However I think the living in glass houses/throwing stones theory applies here :)

I see what you did there, leaving out the second part of my response and all! :p

I don't expect perfection... What I do expect is consistent and appropriate consequences for behaviors, be it adequate fines (a few grand fine to these cats is like a 37 cent fine to me!), suspension / expulsion when warranted.. Not to be overturned because a $ sign is flashed around, and refusal to have a bid accepted to buy a team.
