Rush: Roll the Bones R40 tour in Toronto

Yeah, caught R40 here in Houston. I've seen them several times before but this is the first live show where he played a P. I know he has played them in the past, I just hadn't seen it until that show. Great show and 'Roll the Bones' was one of the highlights for me. They really looked like they were just having fun playing.

Saw them this time around in KC - start of leg 3. Spectacular. Man, from about 79 or 80 through about 87 or so (some of Jr High and through college for me) I listened to these guys a LOT. I mean a LOT. Gosh, what a band.

Ok, so yeah, Geddy's tone is sick. Personally, I always love his tone, regardless of Ric or J. :)

I saw a documentary a couple of years ago about the making of S&A where Geddy talks about the Jaco bass. Fender sent him one out of the blue and he said he loved it right away. The S&A recording was finished, Neil's kit was packed up, and the live room was empty other than Neil's small practice kit. Geddy started messing around and Neil joined in on his practice kit. As they were jamming an engineer hit record without their knowledge. They heard the tape and liked it, then immediately recorded Malignant Narcissism. Sent the tape/file to Alex to write and play the guitar part, and that's it.

I might have gotten a couple small facts wrong, but that's the story.

There is a R40 live DVD set from the Toronto concerts coming out in November.
I'm a huge Rush fan, but really? ANOTHER live DVD set?
And looking at the store section on their website, I can see the KISS merchandising team have moonlighting for Rush.

Well, I'm okay with it. It's not 1975 anymore and the technology for capturing concert performances isn't as hard to come by, so if they want to offer lots of concert DVDs then we have the option of picking out the ones we want and not crossing our fingers hoping a good bootleg gets passed around like in the old days. Pink Floyd in their glory days never did a good live recording; we had to wait for Pulse when Waters was gone. And I think Zeppelin's Song Remains the Same did not catch that band at it's very best, but it's all we've got. Too many is better than not enough.

And besides, they gotta fund their retirements! :laugh:

As of last month, I had zero Rush DVDs...just picked these up & all are from the 2000s, too-
Rio (craziest/wildest crowd, ever)

Snakes & Arrows
Time Machine
All have been entertaining to say the least.

I'm looking at Clockwork Angels next.

Obviously, it makes sense to give super-fans all the DVDs they can eat. After all, super-fans acquire it by other means if it is not on the official menu.

The problems arise for the casual fan, who simply doesn't have time to consume the abundant feast now being served up. By point of comparison,
why did Jimmy Page not empty the Zep vault 25 years ago? I could have used a couple decades to sort through the material at my leisure. But now that
everyone is doing a "tape dump," it is overload from every quarter.

I always wished that Rush would do a live Instrumental album. Not looking to start thermonuclear war - I'm just an instrumental kinda guy, and I'd Really enjoy a solid hour or more of Rush arranged and performed as instrumentals. Just sayin. :)

My favorite Zappa material is the "Shut Up And Play Your Guitar" stuff, all of which is sans vocals (and comedy). A Rush instrumental album is a capital idea.

Agreed. The vocals and comedy are pretty much cheese to me. When Zappa and co. dug in and Played, it was great stuff.

I saw them twice for R40 (at the Rose Garden and at the Forum) and they still have it in a big way. Still have yet to see a band put on anywhere close to the show Rush does, especially considering they're a 3 piece.....

Well, as Geddy's voice continues to age, we may yet see a lot more instrumental work from these guys.

Last few shows I've seen I notice that he sings great on the recent, S&A and Clockwork stuff, which was written for his current voice condition, but he had to adjust his voice a lot to get through the 70s screamy stuff. No complaints from me; he still gets the job done and R40 was a fantastic show. Just an observation that time is the enemy of vocal ability and there's no going back.

Instrumental skill, on the other hand, tends to get better with age as long as you can stay healthy enough, and Rush's total skill set has only gotten better over time.

Clockwork Angels is one of my favorite albums. And oddly enough, it's got no instrumental pieces on it. Snakes and Arrows had 3 for cryin' out loud!
