Rye Whiskey

For me, I find Canadian whiskeys to be too sweet, along with the typical Tennessee whiskey ( Jack) Although jack/ coke is my tavern go to. Bullit and Knob Creek don’t do much for me - I feel like they are fan boy bourbons. Woodford Reserve is decent. I don’t care for sweet - so I want to LOVE rye, but haven’t found the right one yet. My guitar player owns a micro distillery and produces some amazing bourbons. I need to push him into a rye....

Well - currently you’d have to travel to Minocqua, Wisconsin . He’s small but growing.

I like Sandstone and Wishkah River. Copperworks is good too, but the times I've been the whiskies taste like they need more time.
Woodinville does a good rye.

Regarding Copperworks, when you say they taste like they need more time, does the flavor not contain enough complexity/subtlety?

Yeah, that's how I'd describe it.
It's good, and the guys who run the joint are cool and super hospitable.
I base those comments off my experience drinking different bourbons from three years to 20+.

The La Bodega I go to has a special on the Templeton 4 year, pretty good deal I think at 21 bucks. I’ll grab it and try it out.

It has a smooth finish. More soft and warm than spicy.

Just tried this recently, and liked it alot. My usual is Bulleit. My buddy was out visiting from Iowa, that his drink, so we bought some. The bottle was $5 cheaper here in Calif than Iowa.

See if your Iowa buddy knows about Cedar Ridge. They are a distillery in Iowa.
They make a bourbon that is really, really good. I haven't had their rye, but if it's anything like the bourbon, it won't disappoint.

The roaster is a friend of mine, but there is no benefit to me if anyone buys his coffee.
I've bought this coffee a couple different times, and it's excellent. Especially as a cold brew poured over a vanilla simple syrup.

My wife really likes the 15 WhistlePig. Expensive I know but when momma says to get it, I get it. I really like it too.

I went to get rye. The store didn't sell it in pints and the ones I wanted were almost the same price as my favorite single malts. I chickened out and bought a pint of single malt. When my work gives out gift cards for xmas, I'll get a bottle then. As an aside, I saw some ryes which were cheaper, but they were rye versions of crappy bourbons and Canadian whiskeys. I assume if the bourbon isn't good, the rye equivalent wont be either.
