Yup I spent this last august power texting him again which led to me buying the dually (although later than expected).

Hopefully it comes in soon, I'm without a cab, and just have my 15w mini rig of doom. A friend of mine I play with sometimes at apartment levels is roping me into a craigslist jam. It'll be my friend Sara on guitar, a lesbian drummer and maybe her gf on guitar and me on bass.

Ooh this'll be interesting, and a perfect short scale bass opportunity.

Friend is jumping to bass to fill in for a band that needs a bassist really badly. He doesn't know much about bass gear. He's grabbing a used SVT 810. Band is essentially melodic death metal. After the cab he'll have probably around $700-$800 for an amp and bass. Suggestions?

GKs have that real nice SS grind that fits in well with death metal bands right? Which GK amp pairs well with the SVT fridge? Probably a GK head and a Squier jazz bass or something?

GK 800RB is a classic combo with the Ampeg 810. They're cheap and everywhere too. I mean, I love the MB series micro heads, I replaced my 800RB with the MB800, but you can get a 800RB for $300 or under most of the time and they're plenty loud and not particularly loud or heavy. Plus you can rack them too, if need be. If he doesn't need a micro head for a specific reason, not a necessary go-to.

But I already sold my 800rb and still have mb500 for sale ;)

Corey what's the volume difference in the 400 and 800? Is it drastic?

Dunno, never owned the 400. The 800 isn't very high powered, but it's plenty loud. GK has always been kind of conservative with their power ratings. Unless you want it to be ultra clean, with no breakup, but most people in here don't want that and most people who want that don't use GK. They're kind of known for having a pleasant solid state grit.

Been thinking about getting on that Beatbuddy kickstarter too, looks pretty slick. I had one of those Alesis drum machines, which was like Chinese Algebra, would like something simple like that and being in a pedal format is perfect. The looper on that Transition Delay is schooling my up and down on timing, so would be sweet for timing training too.

800rb for about $350 or less and call it a day :). I own a SVT and own/d 2 400rb's and my OG 800rb. I truly think that the 800rb is on par volume wise with the SVT. I consider them "kissing cousins". My main rig for the metal band is the ibanez/rat/800rb/810 and love that set up. Using that boost in moderation really opens up the 800rb and let's it dominate.

For melodic death metal, if he's going to be adding any dirt pedals he should definitely try to find one with a blend/mix knob. I have little experience with jazz basses in general, but having some sort of bridge pickup is certainly a good idea. Will he be using a pick?
