S/D-85: Tasty clippings from Corey's Box

I'm friends with enough people in the scene on FB that if I go to my Events section, most shows are usually suggested or I've been invited.

I also check the larger venues websites pretty often to see if any touring bands I want to see are coming through, and there's also a website that tries to list all Pittsburgh shows on a calendar.

I also have most of the locals liked on facebook, so if they're doing a local show or opening for a touring band, I'll usually hear about it that way too.

Also, blogs like The Obelisk will frequently announce tour announcements from bands.

Thanks, I need to haunt FB more and like more of the bands in the scene's FB pages.

Awesome gig last night. Solid bill top to bottom. Getting in and out was a bear with the snowstorm, though! Late night coupled with getting up early to snowblow, ugh. Anyways, Russian Circles put on a musical tour de force. It was a blast to watch them work. So much great gear!

Here's a crummy shot of Brian Cook's board. I was fired up to see the Taurus in action.

For shows there's a great local music rag/free newspaper that has a comprehensive list of everything going on. On the off chance that they miss something I'll check the venue websites once a month or so. Other than that, announcements on the Obelisk or similar blogs...

Speaking of shows, my girlfriend and I are coming over to New York 27th Mar - 3rd Apr - is there anything good we should be checking out while we're there?

I know Sabbath are playing, but decent tickets are like $300. Whores are playing as well, so might check that out since I've seen a few folk on here mention them.

Yeah, that's unfortunate.

There's a really amazing local Sabbath cover band. They play songs from the first 3 albums and nail every tiny detail of the songs. Seeing them for free in a tiny bar with no stage was amazing, like seeing sabbath at a basement punk show. I have a hard time believing that seeing actual sabbath in a huge hall would be better than that cover band show.

I'm going to see Sabbath here in April. I debated over it a lot because I've seen footage of how horrible Ozzy is now. I ended up buying a ticket because I know on the night of the concert I'll want to be watching\hearing the inventors of METAL down the road instead of sitting on the couch with Netflix. Basically going to go pay my respects to the most important band in history.

I saw Sabbath when they were on the Lolla bill a couple summers ago. It was pretty cool, I was out of my head, too. I wouldn't say Ozzy is horrible, though. I mean, what do you expect?

So, what, if anything, do you guys use for compression? I've been going straight from my bass > tuner > Orange for the last year or so, and I'm thinking about adding in some compression to smooth out some peaks and add a little bit of sustain, since I find myself playing a lot of big notes that are dying out a little sooner than I'd like them too.

Pedal suggestions?
