are you using any fuzz or OD? if so i find compressors are pretty useless for really dirty tones since the distortion is acting as a compressor anyway. if not then Diamond and Rothwell are great easy to use comps. The MXR and Empress comps are also great if you want the additional features/controls.

I run a CS-2 second in my chain after a Decimator. I like it quite a bit and would recommend it if you're into older Boss stuff.

Dear prophets of decibels,

how tacky is naming a band after another band's album? My current band project is desperately looking for a name, and after months of anguish we have settled on something. We are naming ourselves after a Sunn O))) record (doesn't quite matter right now which one ;)).

I know a handful of bands that took their name off a record, but my primary concern is that it raises expectations we can't quite fulfill. Like, we don't play drone. We do play doom, but more as a main ingredient in a bastard fusion with anything else we come up with. It's kind of unoriginal, but we feel the name describes what we do and is at the same time a nod to our influences.

What's your take on this? Okay or steer clear of it?

Just a healthy touch of over-driven pre-amp in the Orange Terror Bass.

(It'll probably be doing double duty in my Americana/old timey country band as well.)

I personally don't like it. If I see a very obvious album or title used as I band name I tend to write the band off pretty quickly. I probably shouldn't do that, it's not good to pre-judge a band before even hearing the music, but that's my gut reaction.

But that's just one dude's opinion.

This is my third time and I'm not a fan of the place, honestly. Lots of nice, friendly locals, but I can't take the nonstop parade of drunks in public. I've never cone to Vegas for fun though. Previous times were on tour and a wedding. At least my brother is with me, he's just as big a square.

I don't make any bad/good judgments based on band names (to be frank most bands in the broader genre have LAME band names), but I would expect to hear music in the vein of the referenced band/artist. And I guess that's where **** hits the fan for me personally.

But, duly noted. Thanks - I'll talk it over with the other half of the band next time I see him. I'm kind of torn on the issue as you can see. :crying:

Well, maybe some other folks here will chime in with differing opinions. Settling on a band name can be really tough. I ended up withdrawing my vote for the current band. We went back and forth and argued about it so much, and we had such wildly different ideas about names that I just got sick of it and gave up.

"Name the band whatever the hell you want, I don't care any more."

It worked out. Eventually.

I feel the same. It's such a hassle, and all the names I thought were super duper awesome just tanked awfully. Best part is, he's not making any suggestions himself, lol.

The next band I'm in I'll just name "Reverend Jack's Meat Puppets" (Ren and Stimpy fans might get this one) and be ****ing done with it.

Personally I'm not a fan. I like to pick band names that are unique enough that it will be easy for you to be in the top 5 hits on google if someone googles your band name. If you name your band after a popular band's album, that's not as likely to happen. Bands named after lyrics can be kind of neat though.
