S/D Bassists #86 - Dollar Tree Romance

Dogs are awesome.

Ebin and Ewok
Both pretty much rescues.

So I finally decided to replace the factory strings that came on my ATK. I know they were ****, but I was hoping they'd go dead really quickly and somehow sound decent. Well they started to break in a bit, but just sounded weird and bad.

So yesterday I started digging through our string selection here at work - 5-string selection isn't the greatest but I can get strings for cost so I usually find something that will do.

Ended up with Ernie Ball Power Slinkys. Haven't used EB strings in probably over 10 years. Put them on last night, didn't get to plug it in yet but there was noticeably less buzz and clank compared to the ****** factory strings. They just feel better, too.

So now I'm kind of embarrassed that I had those POS chinese strings on there for so long. I should know better.

So after playing the pile-o-acoustic I've made up my mind about it all.

The 470 head isn't so great for bass but could be a great head for stoner rock guitar tones. Its effects sound really nice. So that's gonna go. The 220 head is awesome for bass. Gives a nice grindy old school tone. Only thing that worries me is when it turns on there's a pretty good pop heard/felt from the speakers... That's gonna stay. Sounds great with my 810. Last, the 402 cabs... They got a honkiness to them that can't get eq'd out. I really don't like it. So they're gonna go as well I think. With the money I get I should be able to pick up a new bass.

Sam had a honk issue with his 2x15's maybe he can chime in again with how he fixed it.

The amp pop should be fixable, has it ever been serviced/3 prong plug?

For me the cab(s) on it's own was fine. the combination of nickel plated strings, Demon, Matamp and 215 all seemed to accentuate the same frequency range, around 550 Hz. Switching to stainless steel strings solved the issue for me. the other solution was to use my Para EQ to cut the 550 Hz region. The reason I did not like that solution was because when I turned the demon off, which I don't do often, things got too scooped.

Awesome dogs everyone! Heres my Murphy...he's 10yrs old now and he starting to show his age. He sleeps all day, and when he's awake hes a hungry loof that throws a temper tantrum between 6pm-8pm then back to sleep. Love him.

That's called the Acoustic thump! Any old Acoustic I've ever played has done that. It let's you know the amp is working, if it doesn't do it, that's when I'd be concerned...

Murphy's fur reminds of our Cocker Spaniel Charlie. Well I think my neighbors got sick of seeing dog kennels and a torn apart motorcycle in our back yard and is putting up a fence between our yards, and not around his whole yard just between our house, man I love it as he is like Ned Flanders and is a freak about having everything perfect, I am just thrilled for the privacy, my girlfriend is all oh they must hate us moving in, I said good I hope they do, good fences make good neighbors

Also today is a good day!

Got word that my Vulcan is done and should be shipping back to me tomorrow! Can't wait to get that thing and have my new #1 back, he's had it for a couple months now. He says she's ready for another 50 years of rockin!

ANNNNNNNDDDDD...I got offered and accepted my first big boy adult job! Just gotta pass background check and the physical/drug screen. (If they pull hair I'm f'd though, hoping to god I have to pee in a cup) $15 an hour, 5-330 M-Th, but they've been busy so overtime on Fridays. I'm doing final assembly of bucket trucks. I'll be kinda working with my dad who delivers the trucks after I put them together after paint, so that's pretty cool! The 5am start time is gonna suck until I get into a routine, but Im pumped to be making money!

Congrats on the amp and the job, Max!

I worked a similar shift for a few years - you get used to it and in the summer it's really nice to be done with work so early in the day. Plus you won't have to battle traffic. I was hungry as hell all the time though, didn't gain any weight but man did I eat. Once I went back to a regular shift the appetite went away. Weird.
