That or he was finding the limits of his amplifier, and it was sucking.
the more i read about these "flat response" cabs the more im interested. i think you were correct about what im more into, the cabs that actually have personality and a tone to them already in there, vs something that is a complete blank slate that i control. i can see how each would make sense and again im still interested to hear something flat like that, i guess im just wondering how flat one of those cabs is. i really wont know til i try one.

from my understanding they basically sound like a DI.
So take a speaker level DI like a countryman or JDI and record it, then listen to the recording with studio monitors. that would be a close aproximation i would imagine...
I'd say that's fairly accurate. But I've never heard playback that sounded like them without a subwoofer.
I say that mostly referring to hearing rumbly low end and bad muting technique.
I have heard my DI play back on studio monitors with a sub. It sounds amazingly close to what comes out of my fEARful.
and that's why I have no real interest in them. Now if they could make a cab that has the mechanical limits of the fearful but the sound of a vintage sealed cab then that would be my ideal scenario. whether that is realistic or not i have no idea. my only complaint about my cabs is the farting out. if i could keep the tone without that farts then i'd be happy.
edit: and aesthetically it needs to look like the old cabs. I'm not a fan of metal grills and narrow cabs. i like'm wide!
Any of you gents play with guitarists who use 15 inch guitar cabs? I really enjoying playing guitar through 15 inch bass cabs they always seem more full and less ice-picky too me. I have been wanting to pick up a Lab Series head or combo for a while now and a L5 15 inch combo came up for a good price.
I'd love to do a get together for some cab shootouts, if there were more people in my area. Recording only shows so much for that kind of thing. I find it quite interesting, sometimes results of head to head shootouts are surprising. It's hard to get a real sense of how different or similar two pieces of gear are, without trying them side by side at the same time, with the same amp/bass.
That would be of interest to me as well. Same bass, same head, same effects (if any), same room - different cabs.

The Dually has color to it for sure. One of the problems with sealed cabs is that with out the porting to allow air flow, you dont have the required cooling to take advantage of the mechanical specs on most of the drivers.
This is a F212 that David Homer at Gigmaster Soundworks just built. You can have the builders finish the cabs how ever you like. As far as wide cabs go, Have you seen Jmac's 15/6tube?

i think im with you on this one. if it sounds just like a DI why even bother having a cab? just run DI if thats what you want, the PA will support it easily 99% of the time.
and im 100% with you on the look and functionality as well. i dont get any farting with my cabs, but im sure i could get them to fart out if i tried haha.

That's pretty close to where I am with my fearful.
I love the fact it won't fart it's just not as close to the tone in my head as my peavey TVX 115bw.
I can get close with EQ and compression but it's still missing that upper mid cone cry.
So I keep trying new preamps, compressors and dirt
I don't think there's any cab that sounds just like DI. That's an exaggeration. Every cab colors the sound in a major way, even if it's significantly less than others. It's hard to say what something objectively sounds like. If Redwirez made a bunch more bass cab impulses and included some greenboy design stuff, that would make it way easier to demonstrate relative to other cabs. That's the only significant thing you can really say about any cab, I think. Just how it sounds relative to other things people are familiar with.
well for one thing not all fearful users have PA support. When there is a PA I think a lot of users like the fact that the sound on stage is going to sound almost identical to what is coming out of the PA.
I dont have PA support. I run my 66 for the volume and low end I get. For me, I like to adjust my sound at the pre amp. So the "it sounds like a DI" isnt a selling point for me.

Two of my buddies are big time audiofiles and they get together and swap speakers around and A/B speakers and cables, etc. Kind of fun to here the difference when I got invited to sit in with them. I love the $600 Maple Shade 3 inch thick maple subwoofer stands and huge brass isolation mounts for the huge 18 inch JBL subs my buddy has LOL
i haven't done it with bass gear but once in a while get together to nerd out over headphones, headphone amps, tubes and DACs. It's fun, especially when the Martinis start flowing.
Wasn't the Dually designed to have a colored tone similar to the 60s and 70s JBL 2x15s, but with the benefits of modern speakers and technology? I'm pretty sure it was. That's why I ended up ordering one. I just wanted a kick ass rock and roll cab that was the best 2x15 money could buy.
