S/D Bassists #87 - A New Gear Argument

hmmmm.... Those may have to be on the simulation list for tomorrow.

Ok. So the 1505 is pretty impressive. The EVM edges it out just a tad in sensitivity, but the much larger xMax of the BW makes up for it as you put power to the speaker. From what I see you actually run more risk toasting the voice coils than running out of mechanical limits, unless you are hitting them stupid hard down low.

The first xmax chart is with 300 watts input, where the EVM reaches its limits. The second is pushing the BW a lot harder. This difference can be seen in the max output.

And now looking at it, the 1505 has performance pretty close to the 15PR400. Very impressive.

mbelue, is it the rise in the 1.5khz-3.5khz that you like from the BW's? The 1505's are a little softer there than the 1502's. You might REALLY like the way the 3015's sound if this is the case, as the 15PR400's are smoother there, but extend higher.

No science here. God told me to play this rig:

I **** you not...the 15" is low and tubby and the 4x10 is bright and snappy and they sound fantastic together.

I had that same SWR 15. When I first starting playing bass I bought a SWR Workingman 10 combo amp. And I thought I gots to get me one of them there 6 string basses, well got it home and couldn't hear the low B, so I bought that 15 extension cab and got the low B back. Ended up not digging B tuning anyway and tuned it exactly like a Bass VI. But I can blame that SWR extension cab for my 15 inch speaker love!

That is interesting. I find the 1502s to be a little honky at times so maybe the 1505s are exactly what I want. Right now I am pretty happy with my sound so I probably won't make the switch right away but if one of these 1502s bites the dust I am making the switch.

If you look at the 1502s you'll see a dip right around 850-900hz. Pretty much exactly where I find the annoying part of round wound noise to be. (If i have the EQ to do it i'm always cutting this region with the fearful.)
The real sweetness to me is it's distortion/compression after about 180-225 watts.
The 1505s do look a lot smoother. I'm wondering if I'd like them as much.
The 3015 look like their rise is close but somewhat lower.

How are you simulating the tunings of these cabs,CL? I'm fairly certain the 1502 peavey cabs have that bump around 100hz which adds to it's charm.

It depends. If I am comparing apples to apples, I use similar size air space and tunings. If I am just trying to optimize performance I will look at sensitvity response, max DB output, and how quickly the speaker reaches its excursion limits. You can pull the low end in a bit and gain a LOT more volume and some times sensitivity if you are not shooting for a huge low end. You can push that too far though, like in the 408, where you have a huge hump in the low mids and then a steep roll off. Its all the difference between "deep", "Powerful", "Punchy" and so on. Some speakers like the CB15's lend themselves to one of those adjectives more easily than others.

Damn CL you got me GASing now. Those 1505s go for $155. That's $100 cheaper than the faitals or the eminence.
Damn you sir.

These are supposed to be like 90% of the speaker that the 3015s are for way less money. They are not rated to go as low but from what some people on here have said there are plenty of lows http://usspeaker.com/delta lite2515II-1.htm

No I've got AT LEAST one cabinet to build ahead of any hypothetical peavey love-heap. ;)
That bass is purdy, but isn't it missing a string?

Thinking of picking it up for a Drop C bass. I wish I could find that in 5er though.

I played one of those at a GC and did not like it at all. Probably needed a setup but it sounded nothing like a real MM.

The GC local to me actually has a really good in house luthier. When he isnt doing repair work, he sets does set ups on the stock.
