S/D Bassists #87 - A New Gear Argument

It's getting all Audiogon in here LOL.
Two of my buddies are big time audiofiles and they get together and swap speakers around and A/B speakers and cables, etc. Kind of fun to here the difference when I got invited to sit in with them. I love the $600 Maple Shade 3 inch thick maple subwoofer stands and huge brass isolation mounts for the huge 18 inch JBL subs my buddy has LOL

Most of the time that I've done direct shootouts where there has been a difference, it's still really subject stuff. I did a shootout of Traynor heads and Ampeg 810 cabs with chillerthanmost, my YBA-2 and modern 810 and his YBA-3 and flatback 810. Both heads through the same cabs, both cabs with the same heads. There were differences, we measured SPL levels, listened at different settings, but I wouldn't say it was anywhere close to night and day. That's my interpretation, if you were down to trying to squeeze 2 or 3 dB out of a cab or being able to get one more extreme amp setting out of either one, maybe it would be a huge difference to someone. Some things are just apples and oranges too. That's how I view the Dually vs my 810. Head to head with another ported 215 you can compare subtleties, but against completely different cabs it's just...different.

i haven't done it with bass gear but once in a while get together to nerd out over headphones, headphone amps, tubes and DACs. It's fun, especially when the Martinis start flowing.

Yeah it's usually high end bourbon on the rocks. I don't got the spare cash to play in their circle but they helped me build a nice stereo with older gear for not too much cash either. The one dude even buys the hand made cables from Maple Shade and a vintage tube amp modded up by Maple Shade, pretty killer stuff!

Thats the thing, I'd need to try a fearful cab before I buy, see if I like it and it does what I want it to do. Hey Ron!

JMac sent me a little video of him diddling on his 15/6 when I said I have no clue how a fearful sounds just how a dually and bassic sounds. I didn't find it sterile or high fi, just open, full, and clear.

Didn't Corey do that when he got the dually vs the 8x10?

I did a bunch of pedals and basses with the same amp and cab. I could compare the 810 and Dually. It would be a less than ideal comparison though, because mic placement can make significant differences in sound. Keeping the same cab and mic in one place and changing the bass, pedal or amp comes across as a lot more useful comparison.

That's pretty close to where I am with my fearful.
I love the fact it won't fart it's just not as close to the tone in my head as my peavey TVX 115bw.
I can get close with EQ and compression but it's still missing that upper mid cone cry.
So I keep trying new preamps, compressors and dirt

Those Black Widows are amazing. I absolutely have to have them in my rig. Everything else I have is just for practice.
