S/D Bassists #87 - A New Gear Argument

So after my super long post about incorporating tube amps into my rig last week and how I found that a small SS power amp would get me 95% there.

I got a super awesome deal on a 100 watt rackmount tube power amp from Carvin. Cheaper than picking up about any SS power amp I was looking at.

Still only 25 lbs, so I'll be able to rack everything together and have 3800 watts of SS power to run the Ampeg side of my preamp with my 66

and 100 watt tube power amp running my ORMAT side with the Dually.

Since I reduce the bass going into the ORMAT side via the depth control I'm getting a more grindy/mid/treble side of my tone so the 100 watts should be more than loud enough to add what I want from that part of my setup.

Ideally I wanted 200 watts, but can't win all the battles. And this way I'm still super loud, I get the best of tube power, and the best of SS power....and once everything is racked up it should still be right around 60lbs total (depending on how heavy the rack is).

Good morning, fellas. Been a while since I've come around these parts.

Had a nifty little shindig with the Dunwich tourbox a couple weeks back. Had friends from all over come out to try stuff. I really dug the ODB & Volt Thrower.

Infinite Flux also played a show with Joe Preston/Thrones last week and it was one for the ages. House show played in a detached garage. We were supposed to go on first, but ended up playing after Joe. So I guess Thrones opened up for us?! Pretty cool. We were a little worried that nobody was gonna stick around after he played, but the crowd went apesheeeit for us. Good feels

Hey Ron, what tube type is in that power amp? And did you get a chance to play your F tuned bass through it yet?

6l6's and not yet. It shipped yesterday so I should have it in a few days.

But I've got 6l6's in the Mesa power amp I've been using. Granted its 150 watts vs 100 watts. But I didn't have the mesa turned all the way up to get the tone I wanted from it.

The depth control on the ORMAT side of my preamp really does wonders for the F tuning, it decreases the bass going into the preamp, so it keeps it from overloading the front end of the pre and sounding blown out, and then I boost it back up some with the bass knob in the preamp's EQ. It's not nearly as low/bassy as the Ampeg side, but it's definitely got some low end to it on it's own.

I'm interested to read your opinions on that Carvin power amp Ron. I've toyed with the idea of getting one for years, since I have a lot of preamp stuff I like on guitar AND bass...just to have another power amp to play with if I want to. The more Carvin equipment I buy, the more I love them. I really want to pick up one of their new P bass models and another guitar to keep in standard tuning. I've got the SB4000 setup for standard (well, Eb) now, the Bolt Plus guitar setup for B and the X100B head, which has become my favorite guitar amp for recording. I almost bought one of their Class D power amps, but ended up getting a better deal on the Crest, due to a "Make An Offer" loophole (seller didn't turn it down or accept it before the auction ended).

One of Carvin P's just sold in the classifieds, looked pretty nice.

Corey, I'm sure I'll post about it once it does arrive. If it's anything like my SS carvin I'm sure I'll like it. I've got their DCM3800L for my other power amp, got it B-stock or something for cheap. It's been working great since I did my rig switch a few months ago.
