Sad, but Beautifully Written Songs

Cut Flowers
by The Smithereens

(Jim Babjak/Pat DiNizio)

Sentimental gestures never meant that much to me
But if I had her here today
I'd shed a tear for all the world to see

CHORUS
Cut flowers sent to a girl with sentimental ways
Cut flowers meant more to her on ordinary days

A gentle girl who needed all the love I had to give
But I was blind to her and would not give
What she needed most to live

CHORUS

Cut flowers pressed between the pages of a book she gave
I go to her and say, "I'm sorry,"
Then I put cut flowers on her grave

CHORUS

:crying:

I also like "The Pass" alot but agree with you that the word "Christ" is abrupt and a little disturbing. That may be what Peart was after, though, and as you say the song contends with a serious topic.

The one that always gets me is "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying", by Sting. On the face, it's an upbeat, kitschy country-feel tune, but the lyrics tell a story of a guy who, depite that his wife left him for another man, has resigned himself that his children would be better off living their life with her, with him taking on Sunday afternoon ice cream duty. It devastates him for a long time, and people around him see that it does, until he eventually finds a way to come to terms.

There's also one by Peter Gabriel called "Here Comes the Flood", that tells a very abstract story of sacrifice and loss. I think it is very sad too.

EDIT: How could I forget Genesis' "Please Don't Ask". In a recent documentary of the making of "No Jacket Required", Phil Collins sings it at the piano. It's gut wrenching - find it if you can.

Worth a repost. This is that Sixx:AM song

*
"Permission"

I apologize*
That your memory serves you more than I can now
You'll have to make sense of my life somehow
Yeah, somehow

Well, I close my eyes
Remove each piece of armor one by one
Inhale this moment deep into my lungs
Make amends for all I've done

All of my devils are free at last
And all my secrets revealed
And your permission is all I
Need to heal

Well how long have I
Been sitting here, I must have drifted off
I cannot finish any of my thoughts
Forgive me for my wayward shot

All of my devils are free at last
And all my secrets revealed
And your permission is all I
Need to heal

I wake up in the morning, and it comes back to you
I breathe in I breathe out, it comes back to you
I stare up at the ceiling, and it comes back to you
I step out my front door, and it comes back to you
The end of my driveway, it comes back to you
Brakelights on the highway, it comes back to you
I could die in Los Angeles.
It would come back to you.

All of my devils, they are free at last, oh
And all my secrets are revealed, yeah
And your permission is all that I,
I need to feel
All of my devils, they are free at last, oh
And all my secrets are revealed, yes they are
And your permission is all that I need.**

Pink floyd- Wish you were here
Pantera- suicide note part 1
Tool- H.

I had a guitar player friend of mine OD on heroin. He was the best guitarist I have ever played with. I can't listen to "wish you were here" without thinking about him. "Suicide note" and "H." still haunts me with the fact that I didn't do enough to help him with his problems.

so, I just listened to the lyrics to The Pass...wow...then I listened to the lyrics of Red Sector A.....I'm still picking my jaw up off the floor. I'm guilty of listening to music for the instrumental aspect (melody, rhythm, etc, etc), and not so much for the lyrics. I'm getting better at understanding them, though. anyway, I'd heard these songs plenty of times, and I just did not know they were so dark. those were amazingly written songs.

daniel-elton john
when i was 12 the dog that i got when i was 3 died and i remember hearing that song on the radio like three times that day. six months later my grandma died and i turned on the radio just as that song was starting up. i cried everytime i heard it for a year or two. its easily one of my favorite songs because of how beautiful the music, lyrics, message, and memory are.

"Oh I think that Daniel must be the clouds in my eyes. Oh Daniel my brother you are older than me. Do you still feel the pain of the scars that won't heal? Your eyes have died but you see more than I. Daniel you're a star in the face of the sky."
