saddest bass line ever?

The little bass interlude(I wouldn't exactly call it a solo)courtesy of John Gustafson, at 3:25---but it has to be heard in the context of the whole song...

Or else, the intro to this similar tune from the following album, Gustafson once again...

Gustafson was from Liverpool, and as a member of The Big Three appeared at the Cavern Club alongside the Beatles in the very early 60's, as well as playing in Ian Gillan's band, English prog band Quatermass, and a later incarnation of one of Britain's earliest rock bands, The Pirates.

Bass solo in the Gary Willis tune Wounded. He wrote it about his dad losing the battle with cancer.
Second place A Remark You Made.
Third, the intro to Man Facing North off of the Yellowjackets Like a River album.

Actually, try the bass line in Dazed and Confused. There's a cool article about this kind of bass line in the recent book called "Listen to This" by critic Alex Ross. The bass line is called a chaccone (sp?) and it's like 400 years old! Now that's some long-term, soul-sucking sadness!

'Round here' by counting crows is one for me. That whole song is pretty sad, but the way that Matt malley builds up the bass line on that last chorus with the vocals... I get chills every time I play along to it.

One of my all time favorite songs from one of my favorite bands. I get to do this song live with my daughters. It's not the same line as that, as we're two acoustic guitars, cajon and bass, but it's still a great song to play.
