Here is my new to me NYC. What a monster bass. And yes there is a huge difference between any Metro I have played and this NYC:bassist:

Hey guys-

Been offline a few weeks as the wife and I have relocated out of state and have been living the glamorous life of "temporary housing" and "packing cartons." This thread is AWESOME - Rob, your new crazy- maple-burled-Super-J is TASTY!!!

For all you who missed it, Rob was a monster help in getting me set up with the full Sadowsky electronics package and pickups for a new bass I was building, in the great spirit of taking a classic design and then adding on lots of upgrades, improvements and better overall quality.

As such, I've had nothing but great feedback on the tone of this instrument, a true testament to the design of the Sadowsky preamp, VTC and HC pickups (all of which reside in my bass). We all know there's such a thing as "three band EQ" and "six-knob configuration" --- as we've all seen on countless basses --- but unfortunately it doesn't give any indication of the true usefulness of the tone control options.

In my mind, this is where the Sadowsky setup shines. Punchy and warm yes, but the preset frequencies, range of the VTC and the boost setup really find that "sweet spot." I tested my bass against a number of higher-end U.S. Fender J's and the difference is enormous - much "bigger" sound (yet still controlled), much more presence, much wider range of USEFUL sound. A great package. I can't wait to get some more info on how the Nordies compare to the HC's and single coils.

Dude! I told you that you just needed to try it. It is a killer bass and ranks as one of the best basses I have ever had....Enjoy her and play her in good health.

Wait until Rob gets finished with her....

IMHO:

The tone of the Sadowsky soapbar pickups in J bass location with a swamp ash body and maple board is insane! Fat as Oprah at a pie eating contest and just as super sweet. Incredibly corpulent. In fact, it sounds so good that lightening shot out my bottom when I slapped the first few notes.

Compared to my other Sadowsky J bass with nearly similar woods (except for a maple top) and Sadowsky hum cancelling J pups, this #4990 sounds fatter and punchier; prodigious low end. These pups really respond to the bass boost of the Sadowsky OBP. Just a blast to play and very inspiring.

The bass with the standard pups has more growl and is a bit clearer with more defined note separation to my ears.

NOTE: my HC J pups are about 8 years old and per Roger he makes them a bit warmer as of about 1-1/2 years ago.
