That is one of my favorite bass guitar tones.

Yes, thats the only thing about that bass. Slap is not that great if you don't take in consideration it's naturally mid scooped.Just came back from a Gig in the Los Angeles area, I played my m5-24, the sound guy (who is also well rounded bass player) told me the bass sounded amazing but when I would slap the tone would get thin, it lacked mids.......![]()

I usually play with 10-20% on bass and treble, centered blend and VTC at around 90%Yes, thats the only thing about that bass. Slap is not that great if you don't take in consideration it's naturally mid scooped.
How do you set the preamp on yours?
On mine the VTC is 100%, bass 30, and treble around 50-60% depending on my needs.I usually play with 10-20% on bass and treble, centered blend and VTC at around 90%
Why it's not the typical tone? It's not the typical Modern 24 tone, but it is exceptional.
I thought scooped mids was a good thing when slapping?Just came back from a Gig in the Los Angeles area, I played my m5-24, the sound guy (who is also well rounded bass player) told me the bass sounded amazing but when I would slap the tone would get thin, it lacked mids.......![]()

True, but the Modern5 is naturally mid scooped. So if you add too much of it, it'll end up with a thin tone.I thought scooped mids was a good thing when slapping?
Interesting. Typically the result of moving the front pickup rearward like that is a bump in the upper mids, at least compared to the same design with the front pickup further up.Just came back from a Gig in the Los Angeles area, I played my m5-24, the sound guy (who is also well rounded bass player) told me the bass sounded amazing but when I would slap the tone would get thin, it lacked mids.......![]()

I think the slap tone is great if you accept that it is not going to sound like a Jazz.Just came back from a Gig in the Los Angeles area, I played my m5-24, the sound guy (who is also well rounded bass player) told me the bass sounded amazing but when I would slap the tone would get thin, it lacked mids.......![]()

If I remember correctly it's available on NYC custom models. However, I don't think with that same PU configuration. Is there a coil-tap option, or something like it, that would enable a more single-coil sound from this bass with the same PU configuration? Maybe on the NYC custom models? I love how they look, Roger and his teams in NYC and Germany do amazing work.
Different pickups and preamp. And the pickups are quite different. They are a precision bass pickup in a 40 soapbar shell made by EMG as opposed to the dual coil soapbars (made by Duncan IIRC) in the newer ones. Why it's not the typical tone?
According to the model, pickups configuration it should be.
I still think they similar, but not identical.Someone once said to me that the M24s sound very similar/almost identical to the classic Ken Smith sound, and I thought they were mad until I heard them side-by-side
Absolutely, I think identical is hyperbole, but I was surprised at the similarities as mentally, for whatever personal biases, I wouldn't even put them in the same ballparkI still think they similar, but not identical.
