Sadowsky Modern Tone Demo

True, but the Modern5 is naturally mid scooped. So if you add too much of it, it'll end up with a thin tone.
Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you are saying, but how do you "add to much of it" if the mids are scooped? you can't add any more "mids" or more "modern tone" to a 2 band preamp. yes, you can play more of the bridge pickup which changes the tone to more fingerstyle but it will never sound fuller in the mids.....

Someone once said to me that the M24s sound very similar/almost identical to the classic Ken Smith sound, and I thought they were mad until I heard them side-by-side

I still think they similar, but not identical.
I’ve owned both. They’re in the same tonal family but I definitely heard a difference.

My Japan M4-24 gets lots of use. Excellent all-rounder despite the humbuckers. The VTC is not needed as much as on my single coil Sadowsky’s. I can leave it wide open and theres still no harshness to this puppy. Bump the Treb & Bass a tad and it punches like mad.

I owned a US Smith Chuck Rainey 5, it did not sound like my Sadowsky M4. I found the Sadowsky Modern more usable. The Smith was very distinct, but my drummer gave me grief for years when I would bring the Smith. FOH engineer preferred the Modern too.

It’s funny, All the basses Ive owned,(50+ over the years, now just 3) some have 2 or 3 different and good sounds but usually one GREAT sound, and I tend to just use that 1 GREAT sound. The modern has that 1 GREAT sound with both pickups. My J basses, yea, I used the bridge pickup for the burpy stuff, and both for the middle of the road stuff, and the neck pickup for the P sounding stuff, but my fav sound is 80% bridge/20%neck. I always seem to gravitate to the one excellent sound the bass provides, and just use that all night. My Modern, just sounds killer, all night. Way better than any J or PJ. I used a SMX verdine for 4 years, but once i had enough scratch to get a japan modern, That Verdine went to a good friend for his turn with it, he loves it, so everybody’s happy.

Agree, I don't see any benefit in using one or the other pickup. That bass sounds great only with both

Nah. The Modern is surprisingly versatile. Soloing the neck pickup is a punchy fat blast through mix. Don’t judge the Modern while sitting at home practicing. The magic of any Sadowsky really is on stage.

Is there a coil-tap option, or something like it, that would enable a more single-coil sound from this bass with the same PU configuration? Maybe on the NYC custom models? I love how they look, Roger and his teams in NYC and Germany do amazing work.
Our soapbar pickups cannot be split to single coil. I think true singles, this close to the bridge would be too thin sounding.

Just came back from a Gig in the Los Angeles area, I played my m5-24, the sound guy (who is also well rounded bass player) told me the bass sounded amazing but when I would slap the tone would get thin, it lacked mids....... :( :(
I would have "slapped" the sound guy! 😂 I have just finished designing a simple mid boost preamp mod for retrofitting. It is a single mid boost at 500hz, wide band. Just enough to fill in that midrange scoop. Should be available later this year. But the ideal recognized slap tone is 70's Fender locations a la Marcus Miller.

cant wait to hear it! I have been using the Aguilar DB316 midrange sweep mine pedal, it works OK
