So, I've been reading this thread, and the various reactions, and I can't help wondering if this is about the dilution of quality from a company that staked its reputation and price point on craftsmanship, or if it is about a once-exclusive club becoming less-than-exclusive?

I definitely think that not being so exclusive is huge because those who have great basses will still have great basses. What Sadowsky is doing has been done by others more times than I can count.
I'm not sure why you are constantly apologizing for the man.
Ferrari and Lamborghini *could* also start making budget cars but you don't see them doing that do you? Why is that?
I don't buy a Lamborghini to be associated with a Yugo.
Forever more, great instruments or not, whether Roger still makes NYC Sadowskys or not, The Sadowsky name will FOREVER also be associated with a "cheap", Chinese made entry level instrument with generic hardware. And as we have seen above, won't even put his name on the headstock. SMH.
If you watch the OP video, Roger specifically stated that the headstock branding was not correct. I think you all are looking at a scramble job. Roger also stated it would be fixed by NAMM; but, who knows? My guess is that Pat Wilkins will be doing some hurry up water slides.

Availability of a $1000 Sadowsky will be great, and bring the brand to regular working stiff musicians. that does zero to decrease the value of the higher end custom work.
One of the best Sadowsky’s I ever gigged was a black Metro RV4. Great bass. I traded it in towards my NYC build when I had the funds for it. The new(ish) instrument sounds essentially the same, but has important (to me) refinements that would never be confused with Metro grade basses. Elitism is NOT why one goes custom. Heck, you can pretty much put a Sadowsky preamp in a used MIM Fender and get 90% of what’s going on with a Sadowsky. So, please, think twice before posting such a troll comment.

The new Metro Express has a unique logo so no chance of mistaking them for the more expensive basses.
That would not bother because I am not trying worship a brand name. As I said before, it has the neck profile and feel of a Sadowsky five string and sounds good, I would be interested and will probably buy one.

I would simply be happy to have the option of buying a Sadowsky designed bass at G&L Tribute price point.
I’m pretty familiar with the regular Sadowsky players on TB, having participated in that thread for about 15 years now. I haven’t seen a single post that would fall into your hypothetical category. The cadre of players in that “guild” simply wouldn’t do what you are describing. You, on the other hand, are fairly new to TB. I’d suggest you walk softly until you know a little bit more about the folks here.

Ferrari did, in fact, make "lesser" models over the years.
In the mid '60s he he created the Dino series, starting with the Dino 206, which went on to, basically, become the vastly popular 308 series of cars, culminating in the (granted, not inexpensive
288 GTO and, eventually, the F40); in 2008, a less expensive model, the California, was introduced.Of course, budget is relative, here.

And to your early 'point', if anything the NYC Sadowsky basses I own will go up in value in the years to come. Then again, I don't buy instruments with that in mind.

Okay, not having an actual Sadowsky preamp might be a deal-killer for me.
Again I say that I’m excited to see the German metros, and even the new metro express. I’ve been wanting something for those hot and humid beachy gigs where there’s always a chance of some sort of precipitation.
That’s coming from a Sadowsky NYC and Japan Metro player that puts in over 150 gigs a year. Not bragging, just qualifying myself as one of the working pros on talkbass that someone earlier said don’t exist

Same here. And to BeefPie84's point ... even though it's in the realm of 'what if' ... it would absolutely be a ding on Roger's good name if a player's first encounter with his brand is a poorly-setup instrument with a subpar preamp. If that's how this stacks up ... again, big IF ... then he might be right.
Someone earlier in the thread mentioned the Metroline as being a downgrade from the level of quality of the NYC line, and I have to disagree with that.
This is what strikes me as I've read a couple threads on this topic. It seems there are folks who are upset that they'll lose their own status symbol when less expensive versions are available. It has little to do with the future products produced. Everyone knows, and many have pointed it out here, that plenty of big companies have developed cheaper lines and partnerships with other factories which can produce at that lower price point. I think what's also fairly common knowledge is that plenty of these cheaper instruments are perfectly playable, even really nice in many cases, especially if a skilled tech sets them up. People rave about Squier basses here on TB all the time and in a good player's hands most basses can be made to sound great. My G&L Tribute L2500 plays and sounds killer!
