i have had the same strings on my bass for 25 years. is this at all excusable?

same strings 25 years

I know of studios that have recording basses with strings that old and they sound great so ?? If it works dont fix it.

By the way, what brand and type of strings are we talking about here? Have they been played regularly during the last 25 yrs?
If you like the way they play that’s your call. But also, eww. If I had the same strings for that long my finger board would look like clam chowder.
I played a set of GHS Boomers 3-4 hours a day, every day for a month. There was no warning....they just went dead. I had to change them. Can't stand dead strings.
As long as they will still intonate properly and stay in tune, why not? I have 44 year old strings on my Danelectro/Silvertone.
The TI flats on my 2012 are only 10 years old so far, but I have absolutely no intention of ever changing them. They just keep getting better sounding and more economical as years go by! Truly lifetime strings.
I just bought my first set of flats, E.B. Cobalt flats.

I hate dead strings. I can’t imagine keeping strings on a bass that long.

Depends on how many hours you’ve played them, and or if they are corroded. If you have a boatload of hours on them or they are corroded, you may have intonation issues. If your strings have wear bands where they rub on the frets, you might want to spring for a new set.

Tomorrow, I'm picking up a 1981 Peavey T40 bass and supposedly (and I don't know how one would know), the strings on it are the original set of strings. I played the bass and they didn't sound too bad, actually. But I'll be a-changing them before long. Because that's what I do....
PS, those 40-year-old strings look a lot better than yours....
More on this bass tomorrow after I get it home (buying it locally). I'll be doing a NQSNBD (Not Quite So New Bass Day) post tomorrow with pics. I'll write more about it then. And why I'm buying it.
