Sandy Anderson.....R.I.P.

My good friend, Sandy Anderson passed away from the effects of the Corona virus. We were in a band together during my HS days. He then formed the band Unlimited Touch. A funky, disco band that had a couple hits on the R&B charts in the early 80's. He was also involved in the controversy of who played bass on the Odyssey hit, Inside Out. Many thought it was Mark Adams from the funk band, Slave. It was Sandy as confirmed to me by himself, the producer and keyboardist on the track.
He passed away early this morning. His wife is also in the hospital fighting for her life.

Deepest condolences on your loss... unfortunately, this is only the beginning for the US - the federal government's decision to do nothing until well after the horses left the barn is something you guys need to hold them to account for. Per yesterday's brief, they're "hopeful" at this point that they can keep the number of deaths in the US to between 100k-240k, which is 30-70x worse than 9/11. This is absolutely unthinkable for the most powerful country in the world.
Unlimited Touch was currently undergoing a revival. The entire original band reformed and did some European dates last year. You can find some video clips on YouTube. They were planning to perform regularly at festivals and Funkfests. This is a big blow. Sandy was a founding member of Unlimited Touch. Sandy, Tony Cintron and Phil Hamilton were in a band I was also in during my late HS days. Stephanie James also attend my HS and was in a girl group during that time. I met Lenny Underwood but did not know Audrey Wheeler-Downing. Sandy played sax (incredible sax player). I didn't know he played bass until he brought his bass to rehearsal one day. Pulled it out and proceeded to destroy that thing! LOL. I was astounded at how good he was as a 17 year old kid. He had Mark Adams (Slave) style down to a T. He knew every Slave song and every lick! The band broke up in 1979 and we lost touch as I did with all the members of the band. A friend in NY knew him and reconnected us about 10 years ago. We had been chatting ever since. I was planning to visit NY this month to go see him and do a video interview but that rug was pulled from under my feet. SMH! So I will never get to physically see him in person ever again! I'm extremely sad about this. Second time this has happened to me with another dear friend who passed away and my plans to visit got curtailed! Sandy left a legacy though. Music. It was his life! I pray his wife makes it through!

Very sad. These are strange and spooky times. My wife and I moved off Long Island NY (six months ago) to a rural area in upstate NY. We are pretty much off the grid ( but we obviously have internet etc.). I think we’re lucky in that sense, but my kids are in NYC and Brooklyn. They think I’m an alarmist.

It's funny, I didn't know it was my former band-mates until a friend told me. But I knew Tony, Phil and Sandy (and Stephanie) were going to be professional musicians. That's how good they were in HS. Our band was pretty damn good. If I can find them, I'll post some audio clips. Be advised, they were recorded on a cassette tape recorder back in 1977 so sound quality is horrible.
Stephanie was also a very good singer in her own right. Very popular in HS as her beauty matched her talent. She was gorgeous. Lenny and Audrey didn't attend my HS.
As for Inside Out......you know, I never even noticed the similarities of the bassline as compared to Mark Adams playing back then. It wasn't until Sandy told me it was him. I then listened to it (40 years after it was released mind you) and said, yeah, it sounds like Mark Adams but there were some nuances in there that Mark never played. Wasn't any of his typical sounding licks. Yet folks swore it was Mark. I contacted the producer of the track and he ran down the story but that is was indeed Sandy on bass. Even Mark Adams thought it was himself. LOL

I'm listening to it thinking "Wow... Sandy Anderson sounds exactly like Percy here." All the while, I'm seeing the track title "Percy and Me", but it isn't registering.
This track features Percy Jones in duet with Anderson. Now I see online that they were good friends. Many years ago I knew Percy Jones and his family during about a decade. It's all a very New York City small world.

Thanks for that. I was lucky enough to do sound for Phil for about 5 years before he moved to LA a few years ago. He is so missed here but LA is a better place for it.
