Can the RPM do a fat, growly funk tone?

Everything I've listened was focus on grindy rock tone, and that alone almost got me to pull the trigger...

I agree with ihateusernames. The RPM isn't as sparkly as the RBI, but for fat funk you don't want sparkle, you want fat lows and mids, and the sweep mid on the RPM has you covered there.

My plans are to record that PDDI this evening. I swapped the electronics out of my spector (tone dump thread)for a 3 band set (BQC).

Should be more interesting now, but I'll also record my Alembic, Ibanez and Fender too (Ibanez and Fender are fretless).

FYI/FWIW to anyone who's interested: I recently tried running into RPM first and RBI second, but didn't care for it as much -- not enough sparkle. Works better for me to start with the sparkle and dirty that up, rather than try to brighten up the dark signal of the RBI. So, I'm back to bass --> RBI --> RPM.

Try them in parallel!!!!!!!

Been a while since I posted in this thread (but have been following it closely). I noticed not too many sound clips of passive basses yet. Here's me goofing around to one of my favorite 70's songs.
Clip done on a stock Squier Affinity V Jazz Bass with Blend on FULL, Drive on 50%. Bass is ridiculously loud in the mix (on purpose) & a couple of sour notes to boot. As usual, no compression, EQ, or anything, just played on top of the song.

I've been following this thread closely and, for the sound I'm after, the RPM seems the way to growl...er...to go.

I'm a bit lost now on what SansAmp you used. You say a PDDI with 3 channels. I didn't find a PDDI with three channels on the SansAmp website. I'd appreciate if you could tell us which exact uint you're referring to.

I know exactly how you feel. These preamps ARE very different, and that's why I use both together. I use the RBI for sparkle (presence control), and then dial in midrange growl with the sweep mid of the RPM. Very nice combo.

If Tech21 would put out a unit that combines these two, we would have a winner. Seems like a lot of players lilke something from each unit!

Agree, though since they do have the ability to be operated together either simultaneously or as different channels, they Tech21 probably won't do it. Also, figure that the cost of purchasing both units is the same or less than a lot of the preamps out on the market.

After reading all of this I think I'm going to go for the RPM. But a general question on setting up this with other gear I have, how would you set this up with a pre-amp and compressor? Like what lead goes where in regards to send and return etc??

That info is in the manual IIRC. It should tell you what they suggest goes before and after, but it also goes on to tell you to experiment too.
