SansAmp RBI vs RPM

Even before I got my RPM I used my RBI through a Bergantino NV610, which is essentially a smaller version of the classic Ampeg 8x10. It DOES kill!

go with the RPM. while it can produce a good amount of dirt, the drive control has a very useable sweep and plenty of range to play around with. i find it goes from clean to subtle shades of drive up to about 12:00. things don't really start getting raunchy until around 1:00, so there is plenty of room to play with.

i don't think you'll be disappointed. i consider my RBI/RPM + DB728 to be the ultimate SVT killer.

rane makes a 1 unit rackmount, the SM26, that should be ideal. only one ive really found that would fit the bill for blending preamps. they go fairly cheap on eBay.

Re-bump. Is there a way to toggle between GK, RPM, and both with this method, sort of a three channel amp?

I've had my rpm for a few days now and it's been a steep learnng curve trying to get to grips with it. It's definetly a different beast to the standard bddi. I found it very much darker tonally to the normal pedal.

Anyway, 1st rehearsal i had on the day i got it, my first thoughts were '*** have i done' - my tone was totally sucking - and everyone was complaining they couldnt hear me haha! I was a bit nervous that i'd just wasted a lot of money on this!!

So i spent the day after messing around with it and geting to grips and had another rehearsal tonight and my sound was a lot better. I was finding it hard to set the right amount of mid and that right frquency and also found that the mid sweep effected the amount of gain applied. I also found it hard to get a good mix of the blend of the sansamp and my bass.

Still not totally satisfied I decided to record withy my old bass driver di into pro tools, then spent an hour trying to recreate a similar tone with the rpm, which i was fairly succesfull at (you can use more blend on the rpm than with the bddi). Im now going to tweak it again a bit more and maybe add some more gain and adjust the mid controls slightly. There definetly is more mid to my tone now- only slightly tho - im not a fan of total honk,

I found it weird but i suddenly discovered i miss the presence control on the bddi- used with just a slight touch definetly adds something.. something i cant quite get with the rpm. but im quite happy with the rpm now...

I'm considering maybe setting the rpm as a dirty chanel (the distortion is awesome) and using the bass driver for a cleaner channel.. im un decided as yet tho as i have a nice tc electronics distortion which adds a nice bit of grrrrr every now and again!!:bassist:

I know exactly how you feel. These preamps ARE very different, and that's why I use both together. I use the RBI for sparkle (presence control), and then dial in midrange growl with the sweep mid of the RPM. Very nice combo.

FYI/FWIW to anyone who's interested: I recently tried running into RPM first and RBI second, but didn't care for it as much -- not enough sparkle. Works better for me to start with the sparkle and dirty that up, rather than try to brighten up the dark signal of the RBI. So, I'm back to bass --> RBI --> RPM.

OT, a little bit,
I recently purchased the PDDI. Played a gig with it last night, I must say, just awesome! (Gotta record in a studio today), Loved the fact that I could get good OD, without using strictly a fuzz or distortion pedal, I a/b'ed this with the EBS valve drive, to my ears, I preferred the sans.
I had purchased the item at a "big box", In the beginning I was looking for an RBI or RPM, however, sales guy informed me that they had none in stock and the other branch nearby did not either (Don't know if that was completely true though).I noticed that they did have the BDDI and PDDI. I was curious about the PDDI. I had tried it through a markbass combo ( I think it was a 2-8" combo) and my spector euro5. The other reason I bought the PDDI instead, 3 channels. I was able to create a channel, especially for slap, one for light drive and one for heavy dirt. The multi channel part was the selling point to me, more versitile (IMO).I'll post some clips soon.

Yep, I'll try and get that done this evening, I gotta dial in a couple other pieces w/ it, a Rane 31 band eq and an Alesis compressor, via a shure wireless. The plan is to run from the wireless to the compressor to the PDDI to the EQ to a Mackie 1400i to da cab.

Alas,
I've spent time putting it all together (the rack and goodies).
The compressor (before the PDDI) was a good idea, I've spent years without one, I guess I was just lazy. The EQ (after the PDDI) gave the PDDI a major kick in the behind to the mid hump (sorry for using your phrase wilser ;) ).
Right now my studio room is a mess w/ cables going every which-a-way, so I have yet to record it.
I'll try and git r done this week.
