Saw Prince the other night....

Saw his little 30 minute "teaser" last night. Damn I wish they would have had that show on for 2 hours at least. The two new songs sounded great and that band was extra tight!! Rhonda was funky and in the pocket as usual and the new drummer was kickin'! I'm stoked. :hyper:

The Drummer in ? is Michael Bland who later toured with Michael Jackson.Mike Bland has some of the best timing one could ask for in a Drummer.Drummer Michael White is a studio musician living in Los A. who is one of the industries top Drummers. having recorded and toured with just about every one you can think of.he's played and toured with R&B Soul artist Franky Beverly and Maze for a while in between his session work and tours he has a Fusion band call Rhythm Logic that has a very descent CD out that was released a few years ago.

You're right. I meant to type Bland but had another cat on my mind at the time. I have that Rhythm Logic cd. Pretty good musically but really poor mastering! Love the remake of IGY with Maysa on vocals.

I know Rhonda is playing a Jazz Bass but I'd like to know what pedals and amp she is using for this tour. :bassist:

I caught the show in Cincinnati, and yes John Blackwell, Jr. is a very sick man indeed. And yes Rhonda is hot (between her and Candy Dulfer, I don't see how anything but drooling gets done in that band, but I digress), but the whole band together is insanely tight! I have rarely been so impressed. From the time the first note hit, it was 36 minutes before somebody wasn't playing something (and it was usually the whole band).

Awesome.

Well I got the Prince live in Las Vegas DVD today and I like it a lot. Tight as hell band of course. It was a nice surprise to see the mighty Sheila E. on percussion and even on the kit for one song. She's awesome. Rhonda was her usual funky self and even played electric upright for a couple songs. Is there anything she cannot do on any kind of bass?? Too cool.

It's a worthwhile purchase although it was over too quick for me! :bassist:

That was pretty funny. I can't recall people being as pissed about any other cover subject... as if he can't hang with most bassists out there. Ridiculous.

I think my friend Greg Boyer is still with Prince on trombone. He's a monster.

After reading this thread I went out and bought both Live at the Aladdin and Musicology.

There both fantastic I do think I prefer live at the aladdin but thats just cos its visual. But by far the best prince song i've ever heardhas got to be track 3 on musicology 'A million days' just fantastic.

I will also be getting Rave unto the year 2000 as well as that has to be the best concert ever!

P.S. Watched purple rain again last night does prince not age at all?

This is so funny..i'm over here asking what Rhonda is playing...and today I get home, look in the mailbox...and my new BASS PLAYER is here with Rhonda and Prince staring at me from the cover!! Good interview and a full on gear list! I never knew she had such an extensive resume from her Canadian pre-Prince days. No wonder she is so incredible a musician...and not to be a basic guy but she is such a babe too. Wow!! :bassist:

I just saw him in his last show at Staples Center this past Saturday night. Nary a sequence or sample? I heard lots (the show was not dependent on them though), but I could tell the following were either sequenced or sampled:

-The intro to "When Doves Cry"
-The intro/background rhythm to "Sign "O" The Times"
-The ending of "Purple Rain" at the end of the show (the string section and bells, this sounded exactly like the album)

Nevertheless an awesome show. He even made a comment on how the Lakers beat his Timberwolves, heheh.

I also noticed it was J-bass night. Not only did Rhonda play her Fender Jazz, but so did Prince (for a brief little Stanley Clarkesque solo) as well as the bass player for the opening act, which was MORRIS DAY & THE TIME(!)

That's the Linn LM-1 clap sound!
That's the trademark Prince drum machine sound...most of his big hits were recorded with that drum machine. Especially the unmistakable trademark Prince drum machine sound - the detuned sidestick "knocking" sound on "When Doves Cry."

Man you people don't know your drum machines. Those "synthetic" clap sounds define genres. Besides, using a real handclap would sound anemic by comparison.
