Wasn't someone building a bass that was fretted to the 12th, then fretless above that?

EDIT: ...or am I thinking about a metal player's guitar, the guy from Anthrax?

The two fretless strings are the two highest - why would you have to reach over them? (Unless you're lefty and playing the bass upside down). Playing the fretted portion of the bass would be like playing a regular 4 string.

In the photo I see from the link, you have 2 D and Gs. The bottom pair are fretless. Which means (to me) if I was to pop the fretted D an G it would be the equivalent of playing the E and A (position-wise) of a normal 4 string.
