SBMM Stingray Short scale

I returned my sunburst today… (it’s at the Oxnard, CA Guitar Center).
I had done some adjustments to pup & bridge. It still needs some work on the nut but even as is, it is not bad. The weight is lower than I thought. I weighed it and saw it is a bout 7.5 lbs.
I decided that it would only sit as I’d play my EBMM all of the time so reluctantly returned it… still thought it could be fun to use it as a mod platform, but I still would likely play it very very little so back it went.

I did the same thing with the SBMM that I bought at GC a few days ago nice little bass. I have a USA Sterling 4HH which is a smaller bass anyway, plus it is the best playing and sounding bass I have ever owned in 55 years of playing and I have owned a bunch.

My little sky blue beauty is staying put , not to be returned. It won’t be my main player, but it will be my main 4 string. It’s such a fun bass. Puts the F.U.N. in FUNK!!:hyper:;):p

If you’ve got an EBMM shorty the SBMM shorty is superfluous. It’s like having a Civic and an Integra.
You could make the Sterling into a Fretless if you needed one.
Also it would make a great back /beater if you gig and don’t want to bring out the good bass.
One with flats , one with rounds. I can think of lots of excuses( cough ) reasons to have both. :smug:

I have an SBMM that I had defretted. It isn’t going anywhere either. I couldn’t justify getting a second EBMM to have defretted and am perfectly happy with this bass in that role.

I toyed with keeping the additional SBMM and tuning it B-D, swapping the pickup for something else, or adding a MM style preamp. In the end, I tend to be a one instrument kind of person. For years I gigged as an acoustic guitarist, playing a custom Lowden worth a lot more than the EBMM. More than once I picked up a guitar for those times when I worried about my #1… a less expensive Lowden (two of which were simply astounding guitars, just not my #1), three different Taylors, two carbon fiber guitars… Over 10 or 15 years, I could count on one hand the number of times I used something other than my #1 Lowden and whenever I did, I was always dissatisfied. I expect the same would be true with the EBMM. The fretless is a different sort of beast so even though it doesn’t get played nearly as much as the EBMM, it feels like I need to have it for those times when only a fretless will do.

Ok man this is eerie!
I am making a fretless out of my SBMM-SS. What a great idea.
If I were gigging, the Sterling would be a perfect backup bass, since it sounds and plays like the EBMM.

to try and find neck? So got this one, going on a whim. Found an OLP neck, with rosewood fret board, and going to put it together, once all the other parts show. Found some tuners, and going with tort pickguard. Will have pictures once I get it put together.

A long 34” scale neck will not work on a 30” short scale body. Don’t waste your time.

Not for sure, short scale has 22 fret and this neck has 21. Might be a problem?
The distance from the nut to the 12th fret on a 34” scale is 17” and the distance from the 12th fret to the bridge is 17”. On a 30” short scale it’s 15” from the nut to the 12th fret and 15” from 12th to the bridge. Call Warmoth and see if the have a short scale neck that will fit it.

Thanks,I agree with you, didn't do enough research, with difference of the 2" involved. Was wondering who makes a 30" scale besides MM. Will check Warmouth out,or sell the neck, and body to someone for a project for them?

Well, this is my first post! Got myself a sunburst SBMM shorty about a week ago. Read all two years of this thread and the $450 sale at GC clinched the deal. Happy I pulled the trigger when I did as they're back up to $600 now!

Was lucky to have a really great GC rep on the case. He called me after I placed my order online and told me the one they had in stock was a floor model, missing a knob, light scratching, as you'd expect. He then went through two others that he got in from other stores before he found one that was in condition he thought I'd be happy with. Really great experience with Carlos at the Naperville, IL store. 10/10 would recommend.

Anyway, I love the heck out of this thing. It's great for my smaller hands, I really feel in command of the fretboard. Tone is amazing, love the pickup. Neck needed a little relief and intonation and saddles needed a little adjustment when I got her, but other than that she's amazing! I haven't minded the tuners as much as some of the folks here, but I might end up replacing them.

I've only gotten to use it at one band practice so far, but I was thrilled with how it cut through the mix. Got a gig on Saturday, so we'll see how it fares live then.

Thanks for all your posts and mod recommendations (I've got a tusq nut in the mail!), they were a big help in deciding to pull the trigger. Happy to be a member of the club!!

Do you know if the bass nut is flat on the bottom or curved?
