SBMM Stingray Short scale

I decided to return the vintage sunburst short scale SBMM,after looking closer at the neck, about the fifth fret, had a mild separation where fret board adheres to the neck, and it was missing the center knob I discussed in an earlier post here. Plus it was so grimy, and dirty to be sold as a new one. GC,was real nice, and apologetic, and store manger kept apologizing for the problem,I experienced, and refunded me,plus I ordered another one, that came Kansas store, and was much nicer, out the warehouse there. After all that I still changed the neck, from the maple fret board to the rosewood neck, which I prefer. All is well though!

Cool! What case is that?
And are you planning to swap necks or stay with the maple?
:D

Yes,I have already switched necks. I had a dropped copper bass, that came with the maple fret board,it is long story. The vintage sunburst,I liked more than the dropped copper. So I decided to order the vintage sunburst, and swap necks, with the rosewood fretboard I already had. The case is a Gator case, got from Sweetwater(no affiliation). Case is for a Fender Stratocaster, but the measurements, are the same, that the short scale SBMM,fits perfect,no movement at all.

I have couple basses, for sale,if they don't sell,May put this vintage sunburst up for sale, trying to scale down, you know the story,LOL. Hardshell case would come with it if it sells? And full disclosure, for everyone knows I switched necks, and the bass body is new as of today.

Something I’ve noticed about these basses is that the finishes look very different in person . Pics don’t do the Blue or Sunburst justice. They are really vibrant and catch my eye.

I almost bought a sunburst yesterday. One was just too heavy. The other was too beat up from store abuse with crazy high action. But it was tagged at $300. I asked for the manager to check the back for another and he came back with a new in box blue model that was super light with some Birdseye on the neck and great action.
It was already on sale and I got an additional 10% off.Pics coming soon.

Well I hope your other basses sell and you get to keep your sunburst stingray shorty. You have had several so obviously you like them. And the burst is the best of the bunch. Those are so pretty in person. Has the classic StingRay look. Im wouldn't be surprised if they come out with a natural finish. Im still hoping for a string version.

A Carvin bass I bought in 2000 came with a tung oil finish on the neck. I have refreshed it a couple of times since. It's very easy to use. Apply with a clean cloth, wait 5 or 10 minutes and rub off the excess with a clean dry cloth. I like it better than the tru oil on my sting ray. I recently bought a Squire affinity with a maple neck that was raw wood like the Sterling shorties. I took the neck off and rubbed in two coats of tung oil. Wait 24 hours between coats per instructions on the can. You can buy tung oil at a hardware store.

Pics as promised. Nice little touch of Birdseye up and down the neck. Any suggestions on what I can oil the neck with? The raw unfinished feel is not my cup of tea. Im used to a nice satin or hand oil rubbed feel.

This is a old trick from my friend Dan Lakin, that I've used for years on basses.
Take off the strings and machine heads and buff the neck with a green 3M Scotch Brite pad.
(do not use grocery store green knockoff pads, they won't give you good results)
Use moderate pressure, these have a thin finish and it will smooth it out and it will feel great.
Do the whole thing - fingerboard, back of the neck, head stock and edges.
You will see white residue from the finish on the pad, this is normal.
After the Scotch Brite, wipe it down thoroughly with a dry microfiber cloth to clean off the residue.
Next wax it down, I use NuFinish car wax, no kidding, and it's great won't hurt anything.
You WILL get a lot of tarnish off of the frets so make sure you buff it and get any of that tarnish residue off of the wood, it doesn't hurt anything but looks bad.
Reassemble the tuners and re-string it, it will feel like a USA neck.

I returned my sunburst today… (it’s at the Oxnard, CA Guitar Center).
I had done some adjustments to pup & bridge. It still needs some work on the nut but even as is, it is not bad. The weight is lower than I thought. I weighed it and saw it is a bout 7.5 lbs.
I decided that it would only sit as I’d play my EBMM all of the time so reluctantly returned it… still thought it could be fun to use it as a mod platform, but I still would likely play it very very little so back it went.

I did the same thing with the SBMM that I bought at GC a few days ago nice little bass. I have a USA Sterling 4HH which is a smaller bass anyway, plus it is the best playing and sounding bass I have ever owned in 55 years of playing and I have owned a bunch.

My EBMM is the short scale Stingray. I love it and don't see anything displacing it as my primary bass. I like the SBMM a lot but didn't see it getting any play time while the EBMM is around
