SBMM Stingray Short scale

image.jpg

I went ahead and installed the EMG MMCS. I don’t know if the ivory was a good call just yet but I couldn’t resist. The battery fit best under the lower pot position. If these are like my 30 year old EMG J set the battery should last a long time. Thought about keeping a fake pot there to maintain the look but I like the simplicity of volume/tone. Output is several dB lower than the original however even with the additional gain added is much quieter. A little less “growl” but a great full and flexible tone. Here is a clip from one of its first trips out in the wild dressed in EMG:

The more you play the EMG, the more you'll love it, the passive tone control is very subtle and effective.
I'm using my SBMM Short scale w/ EMG MMCS in the pit for a show right now and after trying multiple basses in rehearsals, the EMG is by far the best sounding in the pit and in the house PA too.
The bass itself is excellent and well made too, the sound is very even with no dead spots.
I'm using a Cali76 CB with an EBS Microbass III preamp with a Holy Grail Reverb and BBE on the FX loop.

So my new shorty showed up today and I opened a case with Sam ash
The purchase was stated as a brand new factory sealed instrument form the warehouse.
I believe I received either a store demo or customer return or both
The box was beat up and showed evidence of previously being shipped and resealed.
it had been repacked sloppily
The bass has a dent in the back and swirling in the finish
The neck has evidence of being on a wall hanger and feels smooth unlike the rough, chalky feel if an unplayed Neck that these basses all have. Also, the neck is a little dirty from someone playing it with dirty hands.

my sales rep said I am a candidate for a partial refund which I would much prefer to the whole return/replacement thing. A case was opened

all that being said, I really want to keep this one. It’s the lightest (7lb) and the best sounding and playing one out of the box I’ve owned (I’ve had three others)

and it looks great

That does look very nice. The black is classic and if you received a 7lb one, you’ve done quite well.

These models seem to have to be cherry picked for weight and hardware issues.

Im not sure if it’s the different body woods , pickup height, or strings but they also do seem vary in sound from one model to the next.

I would ask for at least $100-$150 refund.

But I’m not crazy right? That’s definitely been hung on a wall, played and resealed
It’s even been shipped more than once
Multiple shipping stickers and packing list envelopes
My black lollipop Hipshots should be here in a day or two

I still plan on keeping it though. The truss rod is a little stiff but it turns both ways

Oh I agree. They need to give you a nice refund amount. Trying to pass that bass off as new is absurd.

I already got $60 off from the 10% summertime sales promotion. I’ll be more than happy with another hundred bucks

Hit them up for $150, the worse they can do is say no. They shouldnt have advertised it as new in the first place. I think you are right for keeping it if you like it. You might not like the replacement.

Question
Has anybody used those block sticker inlays with good results.
I’m thinking about a vanity project this off season by painting my headstock black, adding block inlay stickers and making a poor mans BFR replica

my black lollipop Hipshots are out for delivery
I use them on my Ibanez 32" 5 String and they are fine.
I need them to help when I glance down to navigate the neck when I'm playing in the pit.
