I conducted the dreaded "yarn test" and I passed. Everything lined up. I must have done something right.

It still amazes me the amount of figure you can find in the maple at the big orange box store if you take the time to dig through the stack.

Maple is great value. Strong durable beautiful and relatively lightweight. It also grows somewhat fast for a hardwood.

By the way. The hike was a bust. The forecast was for 90% chance of thunderstorms. Given that the hike was mostly above timberline, and as my hiking buddy so eloquently put it, "I would like to continue to not get struck by lightning," we called it off. But, I'm pretty sure the mountains will be there next week.

Okay. Here is a very early mock up of the finish. I sealed the wood, put on color, and put on 2 cans of lacquer. In a few days, I'll level the finish by wet sanding 400 grit. Then I'll put on one more can of lacquer, let it hang for a few weeks, wet sand 1000 and 1500, then buff it out. Thanks for looking!

Thanks. Wasn’t sure where I was going with this one. Been thinking about a black-to-gray fade for a while. Thought it would go well with the canary wood, so gave it a shot. Not easy with spray cans. Someday I’ll get real spray equipment.

Here’s the lineup. I seal with polycrylic. Then the three colors, then 3 cans of clear lacquer.
