Scales Necessary?

The point is that any student cannot help but learn Major and Minor ideas from studying scales correctly, that is the point.
Scale construction is a few hours of a students time, that's all it takes to get the idea down, then after that its a lifetime to reference them and expand on them.
The example i posted earlier is the sort of thing kids with no musical background at all work out on paper and solve.
They see it as a puzzle, which they solve in no time at all because they follow the rules.
Part of the reason they do it so quick is because they only see it as a puzzle, there is no distraction.
It is the simple formula they see and learn, no applications to confuse the issue.

Again it comes from having a solid foundation and what you learn being controlled by the teacher.

For example if you know what mode a Cmajor scale is then every thing you learn about Major scales will have inversions that construct new modes. Now that is construct new modes, not how to use them or apply them.
The fact that we are on scales means we may have not yet touched on trads or arpeggios, that can be seen as harmonic use of certain scale notes, so the idea that modes and how they can effect harmonic structure is just a waste of time. Modes cannot be fully dealt with till harmony and melody are understood, and in scale construction we are no where near that.

The idea that you can, is compareable to reading a child the story of the 3 little pigs, then stopping to explain in minute detail the points of construction of each house so the child knows why the first two failed but the third one did not. The child does not need to know anything other than the story to understand what is going on and maybe get the point of the story..... let alone question why a pig would live in a house or even how a pig could hold the materials to build such houses when they have no fingers to hold, why does a wolf what to eat the pigs, why... well kids can drive you crazy because they question everything, but accept any answer giving as a fact.

I fully accept your point but the one i am making is "time and place". Get a basic foundation to build on and support what you will learn rather than back tracking all the time coming at ideas and concepts from the wrong place.:)

But I do know that figuring out fingering of modal scales (counting all naturals) and recognizing them in various songs was probably the biggest contributor to me being able to quickly recognize notes all over the fretboard.

Analysis of what they are can and should wait. Once major and minor modes are learned, all the student has to know is "now start the C major in the F key and find all the naturals to make a C major scale starting on F".

You do, however, have to know how to count notes on a fretboard, so it is a thing of time and place. I just happen to think that time can be as soon as the student is comfortable with majors and minors.

However, we all work different, and YMMV.

But the major pentatonic I learned is 134571?

And this shows why the major scale is so important. It is the refference point for everything.
 
Ok so what Tone and Semitone patterns do I use, for scales like pentatonic and minor?*

Now look at all the information you have received because of your question. Your question is a leap forward and it is a leap being made without me really knowing what you do and do not know......this is my point.

So why do you need Pentatonic and minor when it is not been established that you understand Major? When you fully understand the Major scale construction points, then like I said you will be able to answer your own questions eventually with the addition of a little new information that is built on what you know.

So for the sake of this thread and my previous post let me assume you do not know the Major scale construction points, because you cannot build a F major scale. So let me quickly run through what you should have.

After writing out the original
C D E F G A B C then cutting it in half and extending it, do this for every new scale, but leave them all blank, add no sharps or flats at this point,
a sharp raises note a semitone,

G A B C D E F G,

D E F G A B C D,

A B C D E F G A,

E F G A B C D E

B C D E F G A B

F G A B C D E F

C D E F G A B C

Now on each 7th note add a sharp to make it conform and we get
F# C# G# D# A# E# B# and in this we have the correct amount and order that sharp keys are written.
We just follow the order to the key and visa versa to get the correct amount to use and their order
So B Major has 5 sharps and they are written in the key signature in the order of F# C# G# D# A# and A Major has 3 sharps which will be F# C# G# etc etc.

So if we now add the correct amount of sharps in order to the blank scales
C gets none.
G gets 1 and it is F#
D gets 2 and are F# C#
A gets 3 and are F# C# G#
E gets 4 and are F# C# G# D#
B gets 5 and are F# C# G# D# A#
F# gets 6 and are F# C# G# D# A# E#
C# gets 7 and are F# C# G# D# A# E# B#

As we see because the sharps are carried on and used in the new scale the last two scales become F sharp and C sharp Major.
If need be the order of sharps can be remembered as the acronym
Father Charles Goes Down And Enter Battle, F C G D A E B.

If we look at the root of each scale formed
C G D A E B F# C# the are in fact a 5th apart, they cycle in 5ths.
I am sure we have all seen those tables of cycles of 5th, so why try and remember them when you can work any one out from the scale constructed, after all we now know why the sharps have to be there, and when we cut the scale in half we are actually using the 5th of the scale as the new starting point.

So in fact we can just write the scales blank and fill in the detail so

becomes

Now to do the Major scales that use flats we start from the same C scale
The same two original rules must apply. But some scales need to have the interval reduced rather than increased.

C D E F G A B C, but this time when we cut it in half rather than the top half becoming the new bottom half, we take the bottom half and make it the new top half so the top is now C D E F and we just extend the bottom back down the alphabet so the scale is
F G A D C D E F.

But because we know the first note is the same as the 8th note then we can just look at the 8th note and construct a scale from that.

So F is the 8th note so the scale is F G A B C D E F.
We already know that the 7 notes relating to the alphabet repeat forwards, so they must repeat going backwards.
So if the notes read A B C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C D E F G A ....
Then the intervals must also repeat in the exact same manner.

Because we learned that the Major scales using sharps were constructed on the 5th of scale when we looked back at them all problems need the interval to be increased.
If we look to the use of Major scales that use flats we see they start on the 4th of the scale then all problems with intervals will need to be decreased so that means using a flat. In the same way a sharp makes it a semitone higher a flat makes the note a semitone lower.

So from C D E F G A B C we get

F G A B C D E F, the notes of an F scale but not F Major because it is not T T S T T T S.

As before, we only have one option after analysing the scale to make it conform. A-B is a tone, B-C is a semitone so the scale is not T T S T T T S
The only option is to lower the B with a flat. Using a flat lowers the note it is used on by a semitone.
Now the scale read F G A Bb C D E F, and is now T T S T T T S and can be called F Major.
Cut it in half and use the 4th( the lower half) as the starting point for a new scale and we have
Bb C D E F G A Bb, but again it is not Major because it is not T T S T T T S.......I will stop here again because if you understood and solved the addition and use of sharps you will apply the same logic to making new Major scales with flats....again there will be seven to construct.

Have fun working out and learning to construct the last of these Major scales.

Again I accept your point, but it is a very roundabout way to learning, and as you say " you still don't understand chords"...... Or is it you don't understand there potential full use and relationships?

Again understanding theory is easy, the book on basic theory that covers,
Pitch
Rhythm,
Notation
Sight reading
Scales and Keys
Harmony
Melody
Ornamentation etc
was only about 250 pages pages of A5 book.
But how that 250 pages of information is used is where the real information is if anyone wants to look for it, learn it, or find new ways to make new music.
Not being rude but if you do not fully understand chords, then you either missing key ideas in your learning, or are looking at ideas you are not ready to tackle......because you have gaps.

Again not being rude, but get a paperback theory book and work through it, do a review of what you do and do not know, find the gaps and fill them in. Because you have knowledge already maybe it just needs ordered.
I tend to see it a bit like a friend who comes into a film halfway through and seems to ask every five minutes, "who's he" or "who's she" "what's that got to do with it" "why would he do that" etc...

Then i will review the Major Scales that use flats and leave it at that.

So we have the C Major scale then cut it in half and use the lower half as the upper half, then extend back down to the root. The root is the first note used and where a scale takes its name from.
Below are the scales formed when they are cut in half. They are bare, no sharps of flats added.

As we can see we started with C and after seven cuts we end up back at C.
This was also true when we used sharps.

With analysis we will make the scale conform to T T S T T T S using the same logic we used when we constructed with sharps.
So it is the 4th that always will need to be lowered in all new scales with flats. Altering no other note will do, try it and see.

So if we now add the correct amount of flats in order to the blank scales

C gets none
F gets 1 and it is Bb
Bb gets 2 and they are Bb, Eb
Eb gets 3 and they are Bb, Eb, Ab
Ab gets 4 and they are Bb, Eb, Ab, Db
Db gets 5 and they are Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb
Gb gets 6 and they are Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb,
Cb gets 7 and they are Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Cb, Fb

As we can see new sharps stay in place when the new scale is formed.
When we used sharps we used the acronym,
Father Charles Goes Down And Enters Battle.
If we look at the order of flats it is backwards to the use of sharps.
So we remember them in the same sort of way, so it is now,
Battle Ends And Down Goes Charles Father.
So when writing keys with flats the order is always the same ( as it is with sharps ) so write out and form all the scales, then add the flats and you will have all the Major scales that use flats.

So we learn that scales are made up of tones and semitones.
These tones and semitones have a specific order.
We use 7 letters of the alphabet to name the note
A sharp will raise a note a semi tone, a flat will lower a note a semitone.
We can see the order of flats can be related to the order of sharps by the fact their orders are just reversed,F C G D A E B or B E A D G C F
The scales the flats use are based on the 4th note of each new scale, so it is in fact a cycle of 4th that use flats, cycle of 5ths uses sharps.
Sharps and flats cannot be mixed in scales and keys, it is one or the other.
Some scales starting the same space between notes but have different names such as Db or C# and Gb or F#. This is common and defines the key.
The key gets defined so when you read music you are always in right area, nothing is rigid and has to be defined.
This is why learning scales and fingering helps you anticipate what may, could, and should happen in that "area".

I feel I should not let it stop here, so I will expand the idea with a simple rule change and some observations that you should heed.

There will be many other forms of scales that will follow on from these ideas so let me expand in to minor keys.
Because you have un-knowingly learned all the natural minor scales let me expose them to you in what you have learned.

The reason the letters we use repeat is they are pitches, that is how high or low a note sounds.
This becomes very apparent when notated on manuscript.

So if

A B (C) D E F G A B (C)D E F G A B (C) D E F G A B (C) D E etc

is repeated, ( the bracket (C) shows the position of each new octave) then so must the order of tones and semitones.
To relate to the notes above they also would go

T S * T T S T T T S*T T S T T T S *T T S T T T S *T T S T T T S *T T etc

( the * indicates the same octave position and the (C) in relation to the intervals used)

An interval is correct name for the space between the notes.
Each scale note is called a degree, so a standard scale has 7 degrees and 7 intervals. Degrees are written in Roman numerals to avoid confusion. ( but not here just now)
Scale degrees only relate to the scale being used or named.

To make a natural minor scale we just lower the 3rd and 7th degree of any Major scale.
Do this to C Major and you now have Cminor, do it to A Major and it becomes A minor, etc etc.

So everything that has been learned about Major scales applies except that rule 1. about the intervals, because we have change that by lowering the 3rd and 7th degree.

So we have in fact now a new order of intervals that read

T S T T S T T
and of we look to that repeating order of intervals we will find it in there.

T S T T S T T T S T T S T T T S T T S T T T S T T S T T T S T T

So when we use T S T T S T T we have 7 new intervals and 8 scale degrees with new notes.

So it follows as you work through lowering the 3rd and 7th degrees of the Major scales you create the minor version of them.

But one more thing to consider.
If the notes, and therefore the intervals repeat then certain scales will share the same attributes.
If in fact I play any Major scale over two octaves there will be a natural minor scale in there because the main order of intervals does not change...we just change starting position within them.
The / shows the start and end of a Major scale over two octaves, and the () show the minor scale within it.
It should now become apparent that these Major and minor scales all have 5 tones and 2 semitones in them. So it could easly be a minor scale over two octaves with a Major scale in it somewhere.

So in fact C Major is in A minor, so A minor must be in CMajor when we extend any of these scale over two octaves. This is called a relative minor or relative Major and every scale will have one.

CMajor is the relative Major of A minor and vica versa.
So keys must and do follow the same patten.

When practicing scales this is how it is done.
They are learned as an octave, but practiced to its full extention over the neck.
So on a bass we always start on the lowest degree available to the scale and take it to the highest.
So to play a C major scale we actually start on the open E string and play

and in doing so we also practice the minor scale....there is no use to learning them separate because they are in fact related....as we no know.

That said, playing a C minor scale follows the same principle because some where in it will be an FMajor scale.
Well I say some where, it is on the 6th degree of any Major Scale to find the relative minor or the 3rd degree of any natural minor scale to find the Major.

So if anyone practices scales over the octave by splitting them in to Major and minor, they in fact practice wrong, that's why when they play it sound like they are running scales, it is why their playing has no "colour" to it.

Once this is learned and understood, then chord tones are next to learn and that is easy to learn because they build on all this....as do many other musical ideas.

I hope this little part of the thread has proved fun and interesting and made a few points about why scales are important to learn and understand, how they improve your over all playing and learning skills, but mostly how the relationships between ideas can be traced back to one basic premise which is the order of intervals.

I have been playing a very long time. After about 20 years of playing, I found myself way behind the curve with my knowledge and the band I was in really needed me to be able to play freestyle and know my stuff. So, I started to learn scales. Boring, yea pretty much, but as I now realize, very needed. It makes a big difference.
