Schecter and Dean basses

I currently have a Dean Edge Q-5, I absolutely adore it for the money spent... It's my wallflower for the most part, but it's a good, clean, reliable bass that has never let me down. However, as some others have stated, the Deans can sometimes sound too "New", too "Clean" for what you might be looking for... I can't seem to get enough twang out of mine... but that's just me.

The Schecter basses are, for the money, better.... If you can find your 8 string Schecter and your 8 string Dean for the same price.
I have a couple of schecter guitars and have played many Schecter basses, and have been consistently impressed, even with the "Diamond" series mass-produced line. However, I've also noticed that people tend to associate "Schecter" with "expensive" and so tend to ask more than what they are really worth as far as instruments go...

Hi my name is bryan p. fellars i play bass in a studio project called 1320 with the former drummer of the cult (lez warner) Now i own a dean it is nice for a back up bass, i also owned a schecter damien -4 GREAT BASS FOR THE $) i am currentley looking for a schecter hellraiser-4 i understand they have been discontinued?? buy the schecter and pull out the emg-hz it comes with and put in emg good luck.

Dean makes pretty decent basses. I had a dean ml metalman 4-string bass and a dean edge 5 5-string bass. the ml bass was pretty decent, but I liked the edge basses better. I kinda wish dean made lighter cases for their basses. I've purchased cases for both basses and they were heavy. other than that, dean makes decent bass guitars. I've always liked the edge basses. now a days, I play passive fernandes basses and I was amazed by the sound quality. I definitely would recommend those basses to anyone looking for a good passive bass to own and for those looking for something of a back-up bass.

Schecter makes awesome bass guitars. I personally like their stiletto basses for their thick smooth sounds. I currently own a schecter stiletto elite 5 sting bass and I really dig this bass. it's been my main bass guitar with one of the bands I play in. I'm planning on purchasing a schecter stiletto extreme 4 string bass for when I play in my brother's band. honestly, I would recommend schecter basses. they make cool sounding bass guitars at a decent price.

The question of Dean's business ethics aside, the quality of their instruments has improved greatly over the past few years. My new Dean Hillsboro Jazz USA is an amazing bass that can stand toe-to-toe with any Jazz bass out there–Fender or otherwise.

The Zelinsky is a nice bass too.

I agree, the company seems to have spent a lot of time milking Dimebag's death for all it's worth.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm still undecided between the 2 since its so hard to compare over the internet. The Schecter I'm looking at is considerably cheaper than the Dean, and I like the color better since I already have a few black basses.

You must be looking at the gloss white, which I've been eye-balling myself. I say get it, there are too damn many black guitars and basses already in the world-Seems so many low to mid priced instruments are like Model Ts-You can have it in any color you want, so long as it's black.

I got my Schecter Elite 5 string 3 months after I started playing bass and it's been my main bass for over a year now. I love it. It is incredibly playable. I'm just getting so that I can nail reliably nail the triplets in Schism for the entire song and the only one of my basses I can really do that on is the Schecter.

As far as the pickups go you can always change the pickups. SGD lutherie who is on TB builds amazing pickups that are plug and play with the elite. After I put a pair of those in my bass my instructor said he thought it sounded like a pedulla. I'm about to get a new bass and I'm really worried it won't be as playable as the Schecter.;)

Well, like many people in this thread I have experience with a higher-end Schecter (Stiletto Elite 4) and a lower-end Dean (Custom Zone). Obviously the Schecter is the better bass of the two, and a very well-made bass. But, I will give Dean credit: the necks on my Zone and several other cheap Deans (Metalmen) I've played have been quite good. Much, much better than I'd expect on a $200 bass. I got my Dean for under $200 used, and with some new pickups and a little setup work (nut slots), it plays and sounds as good or better than some much more expensive basses, although I don't know if I'd say it's now better than the Schecter.

Schecter makes some less-expensive models (i.e., bolt-neck vs. thru-neck; passive vs. active, plain Jane vs. inlay/binding/figured wood) but I don't think they make CHEAP guitars. Dean does, although their cheap guitars are pretty good for cheap guitars, and they also make higher-line instruments too. But, based on my limited experience, I'd think that just about any Schecter is going to be a pretty good, solid instrument. If you're looking at a Schecter that's cheaper than a Dean, then either (a) the Schecter is a much better deal, or (b) that is one hell of a Dean. If you were dealing with a cheaper Dean, I'd say you'd want to be a little more careful regarding just what you were getting.

I liked this dean bass when I had it. 10 strings with a low B. But it was only a 2 band preamp. With different pickups and a different preamp it could have been a really nice bass.

Yeah, I was looking at the white one on eBay, but waited too long. It sold for $315. There are a couple of black Deans.

I used to own a Schecter RIot 5. Count me as another one who doesn't like the guts. Between the EMG-HZ's and the 2 band preamp, I just couldnt get a sound I really LIKED. Even playing around with the little DIP switches on the preamp board inside the control cavity didnt do much. I traded it away.
The guy I traded it to swapped out the pickups for "regular" EMG's and he said it now sounds 10X better.

The construction and hardware were perfectly good but I just couldnt bond with it from the "sound" side of things.

Never owned a Dean so I cant comment on those
